The Cape Trailer Premieres, Disappoints

The CapeNBC’s replacement, The Cape, recently premiered its full-length trailer. While I may not have agreed with where Heroes ended up, at least its initial premise beat this one’s: good cop gets framed and is left for dead; guy is found by a clandestine group who trains him to be a superhero; superhero fights crime.

One might say that it’s to be expected, it’s a superhero series. True, but isn’t that what we have comic books for? In our current world of theorists and Fringe fanatics, it’s easy to see that viewers want more complex stories with quickly (but slowly) unearthed mythologies. While I can’t say much considering it’s just the trailer (which you can view after the jump), all I’m saying is that the trailer isn’t selling me, and I’m thinking that this alone may be better than the pilot.

Will I watch it? Of course—what else will be left with all these cancellations lately?

And as much as I love her, and as much as I hate saying this… I’m willing to bet that will be out of a job (again) by the end of the year.

Small Budget Won’t Get in Whedon’s Way

Joss is back with a vengeance, apparently Folks over at Dollhouse are already two weeks into plotting its next season, and creator Joss Whedon could care less about the major budget cut this time around.

“I just wanted to die of tiredness. About two hours after starting to talk to the writers about story, I was back with such a vengeance, and so energized and so pumped because we really understand the show now. We understand what works, and what didn’t work so well or what we weren’t so thrilled about. We don’t have the onus of trying to be a big hit sitting on our shoulders. We can just be ourselves. And so the stories we’re breaking are pure, and exciting, and everybody’s on-board in the room, and it’s never flowed better.”

Yoohoo—do you hear that, Fox?

“Really, just every meeting is like, ‘What’s the most fun we can have with this actor?’ about the whole cast. All I can say—‘cause I’m gonna be Mr. Un-Spoiler—is that we’re having a crazy amount of fun, and usually, that tends to translate onto the screen,” he tells EW.

This Week on TV (3/9-3/15)

Kings

(You can view TV Envy’s Midseason Programming Schedule here.)

MONDAY 3/9)
  • Dancing with the Stars (ABC, 8pm):  Season premiere. “This season, a new feature in the early weeks is a dance-off between the bottom two couples facing elimination.” Steve Wozniak + moon walk = elimination-proof.
  • The Big Bang Theory (CBS, 8pm):  “The guys’ trip to San Francisco takes a detour once they learn that actress Summer Glau (appearing as herself) is on their train.” If you don’t already know who is, you probably shouldn’t be watching this show.
  • How I Met Your Mother (CBS, 8:30pm):  “Ted reunites with his college girlfriend (), prompting Lily and Marshall to reveal how much they loathed the snooty woman.” From what I recall, one can easily bond with Prepon over a quick smoke break.
  • Castle (ABC, 10pm):  Series premiere. “Well-known mystery writer Richard Castle is questioned by a fiery detective about a serial killer reenacting murders from his books.” Kinda sounds like Basic Instinct, sans a naked Michael Douglas. Or Sharon Stone. Or Jeanne Tripplehorn.

Sarah Connor Chronicles Slated to Return

    Sarah Connor cast

Although the network hasn’t officially declared it ‘renewed’, TV Guide is reporting that will be returning for the 2008-09 season.

Despite all the money and promotion devoted to the show’s premiere, a ratings drop-off has had execs wondering whether the series was too costly an investment.  Apparently they’ve since decided it would be silly to try and create something else from scratch.

Good news, fans.  You now have something to look forward to next year.
