Another Week, Another Idol Dream Shattered

When it comes to the singers on American Idol, everyone is an armchair judge. Though even the most avid fans will admit that sometimes Simon Cowell is a little cruel and unusual with contestants, he is also usually right in what he says. Last week’s elimination round saw the end to long-legged Haley Scarnato, whom Simon said during the first weeks of competition was “forgettable.” During her last few weeks on the show, it wasn’t Hayley’s voice that got notice from judges and fans alike – it was what she had going on (or off) below the waist. Fans weren’t the only ones noticing how skimpy Hayley’s outfits became – even Simon Cowell said it was a good idea for her to show off those legs. Hayley spoke about Simon’s comments and her own wardrobe choices to Ryan Seacrest during his radio show: “It’s just a costume, I would never wear that out on the street or anything…If my dad can handle it and my fiancé can handle it, then I’m not overstepping anything.” But it is interesting to note that Hayley, whether intentionally or otherwise, took the advice of the trio who host TVGuide Channel’s Idol Chat. On the air, hosts stated that Hayley’s got great legs – “she should show them off.” The very next week, Hayley was doing just that. Could be a coincidence. What’s not coincidental was Hayley’s elimination, which occurred after her rendition of “Turn the Beat Around” last week. Her departure has led to all sorts of conjecture on which Idol will be the next to get the boot.

Simon Cowell’s Controversial Eye Rolling
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Music, Prime Time, Reality, FOX, American Idol, Gossip, Internet, Rumors,
I guess I must have missed it during American Idol last night, but Simon Cowell rolled his eyes during the critique of Chris Richardson. Nothing unusual there, however, it happened right after Chris sent out a prayer to Virginia Tech. This morning, the Internet was buzzing with Cowell’s inappropriate behavior. In his defense, Simon said he was responding to the comment that Richardson said about singing nasal-y. He was discussing it with Paula and rolling his eyes, but the camera caught Simon in mid-eye roll when Richardson mentioned Virginia Tech. It begs the question: is Simon Cowell really that cold-hearted of a person? On Ryan Seacrest’s radio show, Seacrest said, “We’ve got to clear this up. There are these people on the Internet trying to make something of this story, and let’s just be honest, no human being would be that disrespectful to anybody involved in that awful tragedy.” Cowell responded, “No, of course not… The truth was that I had switched off at that point. I was ... saying to Paula, ‘What does he mean he was singing nasal-y on purpose?’ I didn’t understand what he was saying.” I’m willing to give Simon the benefit here—while he plays a meanie on TV, I don’t think he is that hard hearted.

Simon Cowell Names His Five Idol Faves
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Music, Prime Time, Reality, FOX, American Idol, Gossip,
No, Simon isn’t picking out his “myFaves” for T Mobile, but he is naming the singers he thinks are the top five in this year’s American Idol cast. The judge everyone loves to hate says this year’s Idols are “not a great cast,” and “not the best bunch of kids we’ve ever had,” but one of them is still going to win – whatever Cowell thinks. He says the race is very close this season, however, and names his top five favorites as Blake, Chris R., Jordin, LaKisha, and Melinda. These singers are often among the top vote-grabbers every week. But is Simon wrong this time? While Cowell has rarely predicted the winner, Bill Tancer from Hitwise has, according to the Boston Globe. Last year he used search engine data from sites like Google to predict the winner, and this year has named Sanjaya as the front runner in the contest – by more than 2 to 1. It’s true the young contestant has garnered more media attention than most, and is searched online more often than any other Idol on this current season or any other, even past American Idol winners.

Sanjaya a Hot Blog Topic
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Prime Time, Reality, FOX, American Idol, Internet,
You’ve got to hand it to American Idol contestant Sanjaya Malakar—what he lacks in talent, he certainly makes up for in media exposure. He’s the talk of entertainment news shows and web sites, and of course, great fodder for blog discussions. Research firm Nielsen BuzzMetrics has seen significant references to the hairstyle chameleon, reporting that from February 18th to April 8th, there has been a 338% increase in blog references. With each passing week, even more chatter about Sanjaya is online—with many speculating how long he can survive in the contest and if Howard Stern is having any impact on voting. No one could have predicted that he would have made it this far, and every week he seems a step closer to getting the boot. But he’s been safe every week, despite others delivering stronger performances. Simon Cowell has even threatened to quit Idol if Sanjaya wins. Who knows, maybe that threat is what’s motivating people to vote for Sanjaya?

Hey, Paula’s Got Another Show!
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Reality, Bravo, Cable,
Insipid, sweet, tearful – these are only some of the adjectives one might use to describe American Idol judge Paula Abdul. But Bravo hopes to add a few more words to the list by depicting Paula in a new reality show. No, she won’t be judging singing – or, thankfully, anything else. In Bravo’s new Hey Paula, Ms. Abdul will simply live her life as cameras follow her around. Remember Anna Nicole Smith’s offbeat, wacky little ways during the days of The Anna Nicole Show? Early opinion is that Paula will make Anna look like a straight-laced citizen by comparison. In one early episode, Paula will be shown visiting jewel shops in preparation for the Grammys. The jeweler will freak out while Paula allows her two doggies to treat diamonds like chew toys – and she’ll laugh and laugh, like she’s listening to fellow Idol judge Simon Cowell. Bravo will debut several more shows in their ongoing quest to find a winner, including a posh estate-flipping show, millionaire matchmaking, a high-end reality travel agency, and a behind-the-scenes glimpse of a luxury Palm Springs hotel. That really is Bravo’s upcoming line-up…I couldn’t make this up if I tried.

American Idol: Season 6 Finals - Week Five

Guess who I am: I only have one Spanish-language album to my credit, yet American Idol has already deemed me a Latin-music afficionado. If you guessed JLo—I mean Jennifer Lopez—then you’d be right.
Well - no matter how well she may/may not sing…we all know that Jennifer can dance and put on a show. Was she able to help infuse a little rhythm and spice into the contestants’ performances? Read on!

Idol Voting Makes Tonight A Toss Up
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Music, Prime Time, Reality, FOX, American Idol, Gossip,
No one could have predicted that Chris Sligh would find himself without enough votes to go on, but nothing has been more shocking to American Idol watchers than the perseverance of Sanjaya Malakar. During last night’s performance, Simon Cowell stated that he was going to try a different tactic with the popular contestant, and instead of bashing the kid’s pipes (as he’s routinely done), called the performance “incredible” in a voice filled with sarcasm. The favorite badboy judge of American Idol has publicly stated he will be tempted to leave the show if Malakar wins, a far-fetched idea that seems less impossible all the time. His changing hair styles, his growing showmanship, and his obviously female-oriented fan base could keep Sanjaya safe tonight. Meanwhile, Hayley Scarnato is sticking to her strategy of form-fitting clothing that shows off her best assets – none of which have anything to do with singing. When America votes for the contestants they like to look at, instead of the ones they want to hear, anyone could be going home later tonight.

Idol Extends Results Shows
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Music, Reality, FOX, American Idol,
Ugh. Just when I was beginning to enjoy the rapid pace of the half hour American Idol results shows, they’ve gone and changed things up. Beginning April 11th, the Wednesday shows will run an hour and continue that way through May. Now, wouldn’t you think that as the pool of contestants gets smaller, the need for an hour-long show is less necessary too? Ah, no one knows needless filler like American Idol—more dramatic Seacrest pauses, more Ryan/Simon insults, more cheesy group performances. The change apparently comes at the producers’ request, since the eliminated contestants haven’t had enough time to give their final performances. Again though, as the final numbers dwindle, there should be more than enough time to get in that last song.
