American Idol Narrows it Down to Six

As elimination night began on American Idol, host Ryan Seacrest reminded us that “anything can happen on this show.” After a season-high vote tally of a whopping 36 million, what did happen was probably a long time coming - and hardly shocking for most viewers.
Seacrest quickly introduced the judges (Paula Abdul looked spectacular for a change - loved the upswept ‘do) before the Idols took the stage, singing “One Sweet Day.” Idol then reminded all that there’s only one week left to vote in the songwriting competition. Remember, the winning song will be crooned at the finale by the winning contestant. But soon enough, it was time to get down to the real reason for watching: elimination.

American Idol Top 7: A Vision, or a Watered-Down Version?

Mariah Carey night on American Idol began on a rather solemn note, as host Ryan Seacrest remarked that all were “still feeling the shock waves here after last week’s surprising departure by Michael Johns.” As a chorus of boos filled the theater, he reminded us that “every single vote is vital.”
But really, all that’s old news. Tomorrow someone else will be kicked to the curb and it will time to interview them. Who will it be?
Superstar Mariah Carey mentored this week, and at the outset I was afraid for the Idols. Carey is a diva unlike any other - a harder theme night could hardly be imagined. She looked fabulous for her mentor sessions, and seemed completely at ease with the cameras and contestants. Were the Top 7 just as comfortable with her songs?

American Idol Elimination: Did I Miss Something?

Undoubtedly, the elimination of Michael Johns from American Idol is the most shocking thing to happen all season. The fans and the media have responded with the usual surprise and speculation, but as the smoke clears a new twist has been revealed: outrage and hatred toward host Ryan Seacrest.
Generally urbane and non-threatening, Seacrest is set up to be one of the more likable aspects of the show. He seems to commiserate with contestants, makes snarky comments at Simon Cowell and always grandly announces when it’s time for another new episode to begin. We’ve seen him hug family members, laugh with contestants and do some serious live-TV damage control. So why are so many fans demanding his head on a platter?

The pushed-back Thursday elimination night on American Idol began with a promise from Ryan Seacrest, who touted “guest stars and surprises” at the top of the hour. There certainly were some surprises, but most of them weren’t at all good.
The evening kicked off with clips of Idol Gives Back, which has so far raised more than $60 million for various charitable organizations. Next, the Top 8 Idols sang “Shout to the Lord” while a huge choir sang in the background. It was, all told, way too schmaltzy for an elimination night. But more of the same would continue throughout the evening.

Idol Gives Back: Just as Good the Second Time Around?

Last year, American Idol’s charity spectacular was still shiny and brand-new. Everything was a surprise, everything was unexpected. Two theaters were packed with partygoers, celebs, singers and cameras. The contestants were given a week without eliminations, and the viewers were given more A-list performers than they could quickly name. In a two and one half-hour broadcast that still ran long, Idol did it again this year. Was giving back as successful this second time around?
American Idol’s charity special still earned the highest ratings of Wednesday night, but the numbers were down from last year. In fact, the numbers were the lowest for Idol since a 2005 pre-taped broadcast. The stars were bigger, the performances more astounding and the promos even more exhausting. So, where did it all go wrong?

Last year’s Idol Gives Back spectacular raised more than $75 million for various charitable organizations and even helped FOX score an honorary Emmy award. The official financial statement for the event will be released in May. This year’s goal is to raise at least $100 million in funds for charity. Diminutive American Idol contestant Ramiele Malubay displayed more than the usual elimination emotion, but this endearing contestant will be remembered for more than her tearful exit. What did Ramiele have to say about her exit, her future plans, and her relationships with fellow Idols?
First things first, Malubay will do the Idol tour this summer. But when that’s all over, Ramiele plans to work toward her own career goals (possibly going to the Philippines to sing) and says she will move in with another AI contestant when the whole dog-and-pony show is over.

American Idol: Another One Bites the Dust

The American Idol contestants were all smiles as they performed the Dolly Parton hit “9 to 5,” but tensions seethed just below the surface as this group was quickly shuffled backstage to await their respective fates. The routine was peppy and poppy, with the singers gathering around the judges’ island to finish the number. Joy was short-lived, however, as attentions quickly turned to talk of elimination.
Idol very cleverly turns information which might take less than a minute to deliver (“hey, by the way, you just got kicked off the show”) into an hour-long spectacle replete with stage performances, video clips, and of course the endless cross-promotions. Elimination action is always very cleverly placed, little tidbits leading up to what is supposed to be a dramatic end. Were you shocked?

Tuesday Night Treats: Hell’s Kitchen Premiere

As Idol ended and Hell’s Kitchen began, I realized that Tuesday night just became my favorite evening for TV. Two saucy Brits, two great hours of entertainment. With Gordon Ramsay now following Simon Cowell, we have just been treated to one of the better programming ploys FOX has ever tried. But was the Hell’s Kitchen premiere worth all the hype?
FOX promised viewers, during another American Idol commercial break, that the first ten minutes of Hell’s Kitchen would be a can’t-miss event. I think that might have been a little strong, considering much of the first few minutes of the show were swamped by clips of Gordon Ramsay screaming at contestants from last season and this upcoming season. Don’t get me wrong - I love listening to Ramsay scream, but you’re not going to blow my mind with two minutes of edited promo footage. Finally, it was time to get to the meat of the premiere.
