At the top of the spectacular, host Ryan Seacrest immediately introduced the President of the United States and his First Lady, Mr. and Mrs. Barack Obama. Two praised the Idol Gives Back event and urged viewers to contribute to the cause. In his typical contemporary fashion, President Obama then gave a message to the Idol contestants: “As Randy Jackson says, you’re all my dogs.”

Ryan then reappeared on stage to introduce the judges and hype up the crowd. served as the host of the event at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium, which was filled with a screaming crowd.

The Top 12 were brought back together for the first group performance of the night, an incredibly weak number. The only big moment in the song was given (predictably) to Crystal Bowersox. Could this show please make it more obvious that they want her to win? I’m not sure the astronauts on the space shuttle have managed to get the message yet - they’re so far away, and all.

American Idol 9: Atlanta Auditions

Mary J. Blige was the guest judge for the Atlanta auditions, which were taped during American Idol’s summer scramble to negotiate contracts and fill ’s spot on the panel.

Dewone Robinson was the first contestant to be featured, and it seemed pretty clear early on that he was going to tank. He was predictably horrible and incredibly strange, reducing the female judges to laughter. Simon Cowell called it “one of the worst original songs” he’s ever heard. Robinson then launched into a few bars of Rick James. Randy Jackson, fed up, finally started screaming for security. Dewone sang himself on down the elevator.

The next auditioner, Keia Johnson, is a former Miss Congeniality and positively adorable. She belted out Celine Dion powerfully, immediately shutting up the panel. “She can sing,” stated. Keia grew increasingly excited as each judge, one by one, gave her the “yes” vote. Her audition is viewable in the video above.

Miriam Lemnouni chose a Miley Cyrus song. Noel Reese belted Whitney Houston. Tisha Holland delivered a little soul. All three became part of a “you’re going to Hollywood” montage.

Randomly Commenting About: Miley Cyrus’ Cancer Event Performance

Even though I really like the single (and loved the cause for which it was written), there was one musician who really stuck out during Friday night’s event: Miley Cyrus.

The song - which is available for purchase on iTunes - was performed live this weekend from New York’s Radio City Music Hall. And while “Just Stand Up” earned a nice reception, I couldn’t help but notice how Miley Cyrus’ immature voice stuck out like a grating sore thumb. Did she really deserve to be up on the same stage as Beyonce, Mary J. Blige, and Carrie Underwood? Ehh, I think not.

One Life to Live

For most people who watch soap operas, the shows you follow are sort of like religion: you are usually exposed by a parent when you are young and you usually go through a period in your life (or several, for that matter) when you lose your faith. When I was a child, my mother (the most interesting person I know, by the way) watched and . And so I started watching those two soaps. In fact I remember some summers when I was 11 or 12 where my whole day centered around catching the latest news from Llanview or Port Charles. (This is a fact I find extremely disturbing now that I am an adult and parent of two small daughters.)

Review: Mary J. Blige On One Life To Live

Posted by Jacci Lewis Categories: Daytime, Drama, Music, ABC, Editorial,

Mary J. BligeIf you blinked you may have missed singer ‘s performance near the end of ABC’s today. The good news is she’ll be back on Monday, February 18. Blige and her real band performed at character Starr Manning’s (Kristen Alderson) sweet 16 birthday party. It was by far the best 2-3 minutes of the otherwise tedious cliffhanger Friday show.

Blige gave an exuberant performance of her song, “Just Fine”. It was the R&B singer’s second time performing on One Life to Live. Her first go around in Llanview was back in 2006.

Incorporating real stars into the fictional world of soap operas can come across as clunky at times (think back to Timbaland’s appearance on OLTL last year when he claimed to be a fan of fictional singer Sarah “Flash” Roberts). OLTL’s writers handled this one smoothly with a crowd of kids who were supposed to be at a nightclub party anyway. The actors and extras looked like they were having a genuinely good time. So did Mary J. She says she has been a fan of the show since she was a child.

Daytime Dish: ‘GH’, ‘One Life to Live’, ‘As The World Turns’

Sarah Brown, the first of four actresses to play the role of Carly Corinthos, will be making a return to . Interestingly enough, she won’t be there to take her old spot back (like recently did on ).  Brown will be making a splashy entrance as an entirely new character: Claudia Zacchara, mobster Johnny’s sister.  (Don’t try and question how this could happen; played a different character on the vampire-filled before she became Sam on the bloodsucker-less GH.)

Sarah, who originated the role of Carly back in 1996 (she left in 2001), will not only have a juicy face-to-face with the current Carly (played by ), she’ll have a heated encounter of the bedroom kind with her old hubby, Sonny Corinthos.  I can’t wait!  Brown currently has a one-year contract with the daytime drama and is scheduled to make her debut on Thursday, Jan. 31.
