Ricky GervaisAs many videos that are never meant for public consumption find their way on the Internet, so too have a couple of Microsoft in-house training videos from The Office creator Ricky Gervais leaked online. Both Google Video and YouTube included the videos in their lineup, but the films were meant only for Microsoft employee’s eyes. Microsoft commissioned the videos in 2004, to provide “a light-hearted way of getting our staff to think about the values they attach to working at Microsoft,” according to a company spokeswoman. Both videos run about 20 minutes and feature Gervais and co-writer Stephen Merchant, with Gervais playing his annoying Office character David Brent and Merchant acting as a Microsoft employee.

YouTube has since pulled the videos, however Google Video still has them up. I checked them out and they are really great—especially if you miss the original Office humor and the way Gervais plays his character to the most annoying level, with gobs of arrogance and self-confidence. I’ve always found his character to be almost painful to watch because of the level of embarrassment you feel for him—all the while he’s clueless that he’s being inappropriate. It’s complete genius.

According to the company’s spokeswoman, “These videos were produced for internal use and were never intended to be viewed by the public. We are actively working to investigate how and why they have appeared now.”

If you don’t have time to watch the full videos, just check out the last few minutes of each. Following the end credits, some of the outtakes have been included—there is nothing more infectious than Ricky Gervais laughing. Enjoy.

Emmys  As some of you might remember, TV Envy brought you live remarks during the 2006 Oscars.  I had so much fun last time - I thought I would do it again for the 58th Annual Emmy Awards.  Unfortunately, since I live on the West Coast, live blogging is not possible.  I could cheat and write this while reading the online reports—but I won’t.  I will keep my eyes focused on the TV screen before me and make catty remarks as I think of them in Pacific Standard Time.

Although I’m still a bit bitter that neither Lost or Desperate Housewives were nominated this year (apparently due to the recent changes in the nomination process), my annual viewing must go on.  If someone can manage to eke out a win for either Entourage, The Office or Scrubs, I may be able to forgive and forget.

Okay—let the time-delayed festivities begin!

Description  The ending of Will & Grace has taken away two gay roles from our boob tubes this season—and those who care about equal representation for gays should be concerned.

Did you know that of all the regular characters on major networks last year, less than 2% of them in primetime were gay, lesbian or bisexual?  And the numbers don’t fare much better this year.  GLAAD (The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) has been analyzing the numbers for several seasons now.  Of the 95 Fall shows announced so far (for ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX, CW and MyNetworkTV), only 9 of the regular characters are gay or lesbian.  That’s down one from last year.  In other words, out of the 679 roles—only 1.3% are homosexual.

Keep in mind—this study only applies to the major networks.  Maybe that’s why cable is increasing in popularity.  We need to turn to shows like The L Word and Degrassi to see greater diversity.

Trivia question:  Of the 9 gay/lesbian roles this fall—only 3 are from returning shows.  What are those shows?  AnswerDesperate Housewives (Andrew), ER (Carrie) and The Office (Oscar - the closeted gay).

Will & Grace cast OK, so here’s a curious study—finding that the number of homosexual characters on television has decreased for the 2006-2007 season. Only nine homosexual characters will be on network-TV series, down from 10 last year. This information was released from the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation. Interesting, I suppose, since the study looked at 679 series lead or supporting characters in the new season, and only about 1.3 percent are gay, lesbian or bisexual. GLAAD looked at the 95 new prime-time comedies and dramas from six major networks. While shows like Ellen and Will & Grace paved the way for more diverse roles, the numbers are still relatively low when looking at the total number of characters that the study analyzed. The characters were identified on the following shows: Help Me Help You (ABC), The Class (CBS), Brothers & Sisters (ABC), Fashion House” (MyNetworkTV), and Hidden Palms on the CW network. Returning shows include Desperate Housewives (ABC), The Office (NBC), and ER (NBC). Recurring gay, lesbian or bisexual characters are also in the series Ugly Betty, Big Day, The Simpsons, The War at Home and Grey’s Anatomy. GLAAD president Neil Giuliano commented on the study, saying, “It’s clear that the broadcast networks have a long way to go before they accurately reflect the diversity of their audience and our society.”

Ashton KutcherComing soon to ABC—a pilot called Miss/Guided, from 20th Century Fox TV and Ashton Kutcher’s studio, Katalyst Films. The single-camera comedy was written by a staff writer from The Office and is the story of a woman who returns to her high school as a guidance counselor. The show will be directed by Todd Holland, who is a three-time Emmy winner for Malcolm in the Middle and The Larry Sanders Show. It’ll be interesting to see what impact Kutcher will have on the show. I’ll give it a shot anyway—good writer and director pedigrees—and, ok—I’m a closet fan of Punk’d, I’ll admit it. No word yet on when Miss/Guided will air or who will star in the comedy.

The Office Oh my, I don’t know if I can handle more characters on The Office. The cast is just too perfect… so what will happen when three new people join the payroll? I wouldn’t want them to spoil a great thing, but the new additions will certainly spice things up anyway. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Ed Helms, of The Daily Show, and Charles “Chip” Esten, of Whose Line Is It Anyway?, will be series regulars. Rashida Jones, from Boston Public, will join the third season in a recurring role. Helms and Jones will be new employees, while Esten reprises his role as the regional manager from another Dunder-Mifflin branch (seen previously in the Valentine’s Day episode). Does that mean that Helms will be leaving his post at The Daily Show? If so, he will surely be missed—of course, reuniting with former Daily Show alum Steve Carell on one of the hottest shows on primetime isn’t such a bad deal.

ABC Don’t be fooled – it’s not a sing-off among our favorite cast members of The Office, but rather the latest reality show concept. I’ve said it before, and I guess I’m going to keep saying it… a reality show can be created about virtually anything. The latest reality concept, called The Singing Office, asks employees of two different companies to audition on the spot. CBS ordered the pilot, so we’ll see how well this baby flies. Reminiscent of American Idol, the best five singers “go to Hollywood” and are vocally trained and assisted by a choreographer to perform their song for a studio audience. The audience chooses the better of the two offices, and the team wins a cash prize. If the show takes off, the season would end with the final winners of each episode competing for the grand prize. The show’s producer, Laurie Girion says, “Everybody knows people at their office who stand up at the Christmas party and sing karaoke. This is a show for these people. We’re not looking for the next pop star, we are celebrating the real people who have picked up a hairbrush and have sung in front of a mirror.”

TheOffice_AccountantsNBC.com now has the first two of many summer webisodes of The Office: The Accountants available on their web site. The first, titled “The Books Don’t Balance,” sets the mystery in motion as the accounting team discovers that $3,000 is missing. Webisode 2, titled “Phyllis,” follows the accountants as they question Phyllis about the missing money. While the episodes only feature the accountants, it does give these secondary players a chance to take the spotlight. Boss Michael (played by Steve Carell), and Jim and Pam’s blossoming romance are noticeably absent, but the accountants do a great comedic job with the storyline. Overall, this provides some fresh Office episodes while we await the series premiere in the fall. New episodes are posted every Thursday, so check it out and see if you can find the person responsible for the missing funds.
