On Gear Live: 2024 Nissan Z Nismo Review

Stephen ColbertOh, you gotta love Stephen Colbert—once a fantastic part of The Daily Show, it seemed Colbert had a shaky start when he ventured into his own show, The Colbert Report. Not so shaky anymore, it seems, as Colbert quickly rose in popularity and has developed quite a following. To further solidify his status, the “word-trend” group Global Language Monitor has discovered that two terms from The Colbert Report were part of their annual survey of television words that have impacted language. Colbert’s use of “Truthiness” and “Wikiality” were included in the list of the top television buzzwords of the year. Other high rankers? “Katrina” (for obvious topical reasons) and “Dr. McDreamy” (in reference to Patrick Dempsey’s character on Grey’s Anatomy).

“Truthiness” is defined as “truth unencumbered by the facts,” while “Wikiality,” referencing the informational web site Wikipedia, is defined as “reality as determined by majority vote.” This is best explained by the voting off of Pluto as a legitimate planet by astronomers.

Colbert also should be applauded for his Emmy appearance—one of the highlights of the evening—as he expressed his upset over losing to Barry Manilow. Priceless.

Emmys  As some of you might remember, TV Envy brought you live remarks during the 2006 Oscars.  I had so much fun last time - I thought I would do it again for the 58th Annual Emmy Awards.  Unfortunately, since I live on the West Coast, live blogging is not possible.  I could cheat and write this while reading the online reports—but I won’t.  I will keep my eyes focused on the TV screen before me and make catty remarks as I think of them in Pacific Standard Time.

Although I’m still a bit bitter that neither Lost or Desperate Housewives were nominated this year (apparently due to the recent changes in the nomination process), my annual viewing must go on.  If someone can manage to eke out a win for either Entourage, The Office or Scrubs, I may be able to forgive and forget.

Okay—let the time-delayed festivities begin!

Kevin FederlineK-Fed made his rappin’ debut on Sunday night’s Teen Choice Awards. The verdict is in—and it ain’t good. Introduced by his scantily clad (and very preggers) wife, Britney Spears, Federline commanded the stage in a less-than-thrilling rap performance. Performing his new single “Lose Control”, the kids at the awards show seemed to receive it fairly well, but critics and internet message boards were buzzing with the lame attempt by Federline. Case in point, check out this lyric: “Don’t hate because I’m a superstar! And I’m married to a superstar! Nothin’ come between us no matter who you are!” Ugh. The train-wreck that is Britney and K-Fed is still chuggin’ along, or so it seems. Youtube.com even has the performance, if you are so inclined to check it out. While bloggers and online posters with any speck of taste critiqued the rap debut, hip-hop folks were even less kind. Elliot Wilson, editor in chief of XXL magazine, made this comment: “I just think we ignore him. He’s a joke, basically. I just don’t think he gets it. He doesn’t get that he’s Britney’s man and it’s hard to take him seriously.” Time will tell if this live showing will have any positive impact on his record sales. The release of his album is set for October.

Jack Black Good news for you Jack Black fans—Jack will be hosting the upcoming MTV Video Music Awards, airing on August 31st. Said Black of his hosting gig, “Prepare yourself for a rip snortin’ humdinger.” Ah, I love a good quote, and Jack seems to sum up all of the goodness in one small quip. The awards will air live from Radio City Music Hall in New York and will include performances by Beyonce, Justin Timberlake, Panic! at the Disco and Ludacris. MTV President Christina Norman had her own succinct quote about Black’s hosting credentials, stating he is the “perfect mix of comedy, rock, irreverence and star power.” Black has been in a string of films, including School of Rock and the more recent release, Nacho Libre. His band, Tenacious D, will have a semi-autobiographical film coming out on November 17th. If you are a Jack Black fan, check out his work with Tenacious D—some absolutely hilarious stuff, although not for the faint of heart. I admit some of the content makes me blush, but I can still laugh through the embarrassment.

Everybody Hates ChrisThis year’s Emmy nominations will be announced July 6 and perhaps new nominating guidelines will make 2006 the “year of the underdog”.

Last year showed some progress, with nominations gained by new hits such as Lost, Desperate Housewives and the recently-cancelled, cult-hit Arrested Development (which won seven awards last year).

Apparently some rules have been instated this year that will give newer shows (and shows from less popular networks, such as UPN, FX, and the WB) an even better chance at getting an award. The new system will allow members of the Academy to choose ten to fifteen finalists (depending on category), later cut to five main nominees by a panel of judges.

A few of this year’s hopefuls include The Office (NBC), My Name is Earl (NBC), Rescue Me (FX), Grey’s Anatomy (ABC), Gilmore Girls (WB), Battlestar Galactica (SciFi), Everybody Hates Chris (UPN), and Entourage (HBO).

Of course, some regular faces will be sure to make appearance on the list such as members of The West Wing and The Sopranos. (Thank goodness Fraiser is off the air, although Will & Grace may return for one last year of nominations, despite the end of the series a few months ago).

The awards will air on August 27.

This week has two biggies:

First, beginning Wednesday, July 5th, the American Idol Top 10 will start their American Idols Live tour. The 60-day tour will begin in Manchester, New Hampshire and end in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania on September 24th. Now’s your time to catch Ace Young’s wicked falsetto again. Of course, I bet the big draw will be Chris Daughtry—the biggest upset of the Idol season.

Second, it’s almost time for the Emmy nominations! On Thursday, July 6th, at 5:39 AM (huh? why not 5:40?), Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Brad Garrett will announce the Emmy noms. We’ll have a rundown of the categories here, so check back for details.

Teen ChoiceThis week teens can vote for their favorite stars in the Teen Choice Awards.

Nominees include new celebs such as Brandon Routh of Superman Returns and American Idol‘s Katharine McPhee, as well as familiar faces like Christina Aguilera, Beyonce, and pop culture icons Flavor Flav (Flavor of Love) and Hulk Hogan (Hogan Knows Best).

The competition between Laguna Beach‘s Kristin Cavallari and Lauren “LC” Conrad continues as they are both nominted for Female “Choice Reality Star”.

Also nominated for an award is Jessica Simpson, her ex-brother-in-law Drew Lachey (for his stint on Dancing with the Stars), and many more.

The awards will air on FOX, August 20 at 8:00 EST, following a “red carpet” pre-show at 7:30. Ballots are available on-line at Teenpeople.com, MySpace.com, IGN.com and FOX.com. Voting will run until August 11 and is open to anyone between the ages of 13 and 19.

Jessica Alba MTV Music AwardsSweet, sizzlin’, and sexy…Jessica Alba possesses many an asset that both women and men admire. Due to the popularity of this television/movie star, MTV likely made a good choice in naming her as host of their popular annual music awards show. Of course, Alba doesn’t really have any hosting or comedy experience…but will it matter? Even music haters will probably tune in, in the hopes of catching a glimpse of her in a bikini.

Alba (also a three-time nominee this year) is confident and looking forward to her duties: “It’s always a crazy, fun show, and I can’t wait to be right in the middle of the action,” the 25-year-old actress said Monday in a statement to The Associated Press.

MTV has gone all out in securing hosts for this awards show in the past, and most have boasted more comedy street cred than Alba. Just how important is the host when it comes to awards shows? Are the nominees the main attraction? What do you think: was hiring Alba a wise decision? Will you be tuning in to watch this Dark Angel in action?

Description

Is the sky falling? Did hell just freeze over? No doubt some stuffy television viewers think so. An illustrious Peabody award, long respected for recognizing the best in television writing, has been given to South Park.

That’s right; one of the raunchiest, naughtiest shows on TV has received the award long known for choosing the most dignified, uplifting, respectable television writing. And now that includes…South Park? We only have one question: what took so long to give this show an award like this?

Raunchy it may be, but South Park has long featured some of the wittiest, most enjoyable, socially aware writing on television. Featured in everything from documentaries to college classroom lectures, the adventures of Cartman and the gang can always be counted on to engage thought and conversation. In fact, it is often (dare we say?) downright brilliant. Certainly, this signals a delightful new trend in television: ignoring naysayers and prejudices in the quest to recognize true quality. Congratulations, South Park!
