ABC had Vanessa Williams, FOX had an hour-long Family Guy and CBS had a must-see watermelon mishap – but those three networks were missing one important thing: football. The gridiron action in Miami was hot enough to win both the demos and viewers for NBC.

  • How I Met Your Mother (CBS, 8 p.m.):  “In the sixth season opener, Ted runs into Cindy (Rachel Bilson), whom he dated briefly—and who is also the roommate of his future wife.” He heard from a little bird (a.k.a. Twitter) that she wasn’t with Hayden Christensen anymore.
  • Chuck (NBC, 8 p.m.):  “Season 4 opens with Chuck engaging in a sweeping quest to find his mother (Linda Hamilton), all while keeping the rogue mission a secret from his sister.” The only clue he has to work with is the fading Polaroid picture John Conner gave him.

Top Chef may have ended The Amazing Race’s long Emmy-winning streak this year, but that doesn’t mean the CBS series has lost its spark.

In fact, Season 17 includes one of the most painful - and hilarious - moments I can recall in recent Race history. (If I didn’t know any better, I would have thought this scene was from Wipeout.)

Want to know how the contestant recovers from this melon mishap? Find out when the show returns on September 26.

CBS chose wisely when they picked their post-Super Bowl time slot winner. Outside of the sports competition on NBC, the action during the 9:00 time slot was clearly on CBS. New reality series Undercover Boss had the best viewers and demos of the night.
