New York Jets beat Indianapolis Colts 17-16 on last second field goal
Posted by Dennis Velasco Categories: News, NFL, Playoffs,
In what was a grudge match between the New York Jets and Indianapolis Colts, the hype before the game was certainly warranted as the contest was decided as the clock wound down. The Jets were able to pull out a win, exacting revenge for last season's AFC Championship loss. With the Jets up 14-13, Peyton Manning was able to lead the Colts down the field to set up an Adam Vinatieri field-goal to take a 16-14 lead with 0:53 seconds left on the clock. It looked all, but over. However, Antonio Cromartie took the ensuing kick-off for 47 yards, giving the Jets excellent field-position. It paid off, along with a Mark Sanchez to Braylon Edwards 18-yard completion to get the ball to the Colts' 14-yard line. Then with clock ticking off the clock, Jets kicker Nick Folk hit the game-winning 32-yard field goal to give the Jets a 17-16 victory. A Rex Ryan-led team finally beat Peyton Manning and the Colts. Hallelujah. The Jets move on to face the New England Patriots.

Jim Harbaugh will coach the San Francisco 49ers
Posted by Dennis Velasco Categories: News, NFL,
Jim Harbaugh signed a five-year $25 million contract to coach the San Francisco 49ers. This is a great move for the former Stanford Cardinal football head coach since it won't be much of a move at all, as Harbaugh will remain in the Bay Area where he's found much success at the college level. Harbaugh was desired by many NFL teams, but in the end decided to go the route of his mentor, Bill Walsh, going from Stanford to the Niners. Harbaugh should make the team more exciting with a strong emphasis on offense, which is a contrast to former Niners head coach Mike Singletary's approach. After high expectations before the season and subsequent disappointment, it was time for a change and Harbaugh will bring some excitement to the Bay Area on a professional level.

NFC Wild Card Weekend Preview - Saints, Seahawks, Packers, Eagles
Posted by Dennis Velasco Categories: Editorial, NFL, Playoffs, Super Bowl,
The NFC Wild Card weekend kicks off with the defending Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints and Seattle Seahawks mixing it up in the Great Northwest on Saturday, January 8th at 4:30PM ET. There has been much ballyhoo about the Seahawks making it into the postseason as NFC West division champions with a losing record (7-9), the first time that's happened in the NFL's history. Feel bad if you're a Tampa Bay Buccaneers or New York Giants fan, both of whom finished with 10-6 records, but because of the current playoff system will be watching instead of playing.

Kobe Bryant leading the way for the 2011 NBA All-Star game
Posted by Dennis Velasco Categories: Athletes, NBA, News,
Kobe Bryant of the Los Angles Lakers is leading the overall voting for the 2011 NBA All-Star game, which is appropriate considering that the game will be played at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Others leading the way for the Western Conference are Chris Paul at the one-guard, Kevin Durant and Carmelo Anthony at the forwards, and oddly, Yao Ming at center. Yao has been out for a bit now due to another injury issue and won't play in the game at all. When the coaches make their reserve selections, one of them will start in Yao's place. In the East, the leading guards in voting are Rajon Rondo and Dwyane Wade with LeBron James and Kevin Garnett in the lead in voting for forwards, and Dwight Howard at the five spot. The official starters will be named on January 27.

Andrew Luck to remain at Stanford for another season
Posted by Dennis Velasco Categories: Athletes, Drafts, NCAA, College Football, NFL,
Stanford quarterback and projected first overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft has decided to return to school at Stanford. This news is especially bad for the Carolina Panthers who own the number one pick in the draft and mentioned that they would take Luck should he come out. Luckily, they already have a young quarterback in rookie Jimmy Clausen who probably just needs more reps before filling his promise. In the end, this might work out well for the team, although the fanbase had to be expecting Luck to take snaps under center in 2011.

Griffin, Ibaka, McGee, and Jennings in NBA slam dunk contest
Posted by Dennis Velasco Categories: Athletes, NBA, News,
The NBA slam dunk contestants have been announced and there's already a clear favorite for the contest. The Los Angeles Clippers' Blake Griffin is one of four dunkers who will show their skills and creativity during the 2011 NBA All-Star Weekend at Staples Center in Los Angeles. The hometown boy should be favored as he's provided the most highlight-worthy number of dunks this season. Other participants include Serge Ibaka from the Oklahoma City Thunder, Javale McGee of the Washington Wizards, and the smallest dunker amongst big men, Brandon Jennings of the Milwaukee Bucks. Who do you think will win?
Highs and lows halfway through the NHL season
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, Editorial, NHL,
We’re roughly halfway into the NHL season (the first group of all stars were announced, so it’s fair), which makes it time to take a look at the best and the worst in the league to this point. Who has performed above and below expectations, and who has remained par for the course so far? You have the usual suspects atop the standings, whether it’s Sidney Crosby or his Penguins, but where is Tampa Bay right now if not for Steven Stamkos?

Matt Millen admitting that he stunk as an NFL GM
Posted by Dennis Velasco Categories: Front Office, NFL,
Matt Millen was the Detroit Lions' GM from 2001-2008 and it was the opinion of NFL and especially Lions fans that Millen stunk at his job. Now, with John Elway taking the GM reins with the Denver Broncos, Millen who was also a former player without any previous experience running an NFL football team in any manner, is hoping that Elway will succeed. It's mighty nice of Millen to wish Elway luck, but at least the latter had experience running the AFL's Colorado Crush. Another thing in Elway's favor is that the franchise at least has some talent to work with, as well as a strong fan base and record of doing well during its history. The Lions did not when Millen took over, which concluded when Millen left after the 2008 season when the Lions became the only team in NFL history to not win a game, going 0-16. Ouch.

Cleveland Cavaliers offering a job to homeless internet star
Posted by Dennis Velasco Categories: NBA, News,
Ted Williams is an internet sensation and organizations from sports and media are noticing him. Williams is a Columbus, Ohio homeless man with the gift of an excellent radio/announcing voice, which the Cleveland Cavaliers would like to employ, reportedly to do announcing at Quicken Loans Arena. The team has even offered to pay his living expenses. At this time, nothing has been accepted by Williams, who undoubtedly will be weighing the multitude of offers coming his way. Good for Williams and hopefully, this second chance will pay off for him, not only professionally, but personally in mind, body, and spirit as well.
