Good luck to Jerramy Stevens
Oh no, the Seahawks woke up the sleeping dragon, conspiracy theorist, Joey Porter.  Porter has kept quite so far, but now it looks like he’s out for blood again - good luck to the Seattle offensive line trying to hold him back.  What led to trigger Porter’s anger now?  Seattle’s TE Jerramy Stevens made some comments he may end up regretting.

Stevens made some comments that will only pump Porter up.  Bad move Stevens.  Stevens doesn’t think Bettis will leave Detroit with the Vince Lombardi trophy and was quote saying:

“It’s a heartwarming story and all that, but it will be a sad day when he leaves without that trophy,”

Porter shot back by saying:

“has a lot of nerve” to say what he said about Bettis.

Regarding his thoughts of Stevens as a player:

“a first-round bust who barely made some plays this season.”

Stevens shouldn’t have made a “guarantee” like that, he’s not Mark Messier.  Now we feel bad for RB Shaun Alexander and FB Mack Strong who is going to have to pick up Porter on blitzes.  We wouldn’t be surprised if Alexander suffers another concussion.

McNabb pleading to Terrell Owens
When Terrell Owens mentioned the Eagles would be better off with Brett Favre as the quarterback instead of McNabb, McNabb took the high road and didn’t respond back with an insult.  As time has progressed, and with all signs pointing to T.O. leaving the Eagles, it looks like now the gloves are off.

McNabb thought Owens’ previous comments could be categorized as “black-on-black crime”.  McNabb was quoted saying:

“It was like, it’s unreal,” McNabb said. “That’s like me going out and saying, ‘Hey, if we had Steve Largent. If we had Joe Jurevicius. It was definitely a slap in the face to me. It was a slap in the face because, as deep as people want to go into it, it was black-on-black crime.”

“It’s different to say, ‘If we had Michael Vick or Daunte Culpepper or Steve McNair or Byron Leftwich,” McNabb said of four black starting quarterbacks. “But to go straight to Brett Favre, that kind of just slapped me in the face like, ‘Wow ...”’

I am not going to sit here and bash McNabb’s comments, because I feel he is a good guy, and his remarks were said in frustration, but his points can surely be debated.  First off, comparing Terrell Owens to Joe Jurevicius is not the same as comparing McNabb to Favre.  Sorry Donovan, Jurevicius is just plain not better than Owens, even though in T.O’s mind Favre might be better than McNabb.  The QB statement made by T.O. is debatable, while the WR comparison by McNabb is not.  Feel free to insert your own ‘McNabb throws to Jurevicius, TOUCHDOWN’ joke here.  Secondly, if T.O. said he would rather have had either Vick, Culpepper, McNair, Leftwich instead of you, that wouldn’t make any sense whatsoever,  because those players aren’t better than you Donovan, so relax.

Bottom line, I know Donovan that you’re just sick of all the criticism you’ve had to endure this past season, and I feel for you.  T.O. was wrong for throwing you under the bus like that, but he won’t be around next year to pick on you.  Hope that your Eagles play the Broncos in the Super Bowl and hit him when it hurts the most.

NBA Draft Lottery logoAs a fan I love participating in the sports polls by ESPN and Sports Illustrated just to see what the rest of America thinks.  I also like to compare and see if I’m on the same page with other fans across the country.  The newest poll asked which player from the last two NBA drafts would you most want to build your team around?

The choices are Andrew Bogut, Dwight Howard,  Emakor Okafor, and Chris Paul.  The reason I found this particular poll interesting was that I couldn’t make my decision for about five minutes; normally these polls make me formulate an answer instantaneously.  I could not choose from either Dwight Howard or Chris Paul.  I finally went with my initial gut and went with Chris Paul, because finding a good floor general is just too hard to find.  My debate with Howard was that, scouts and GM’s normally go for size when it comes down to two players.  Howard will end up being a rebounding machine which might also make me regret my decision.

Well, America has spoken and with over 72,000 votes it was a close race.  The winner was Dwight Howard with 36%, Chris Paul with 30%, Emeka Okafor with 23%, and Andrew Bogut coming last with 12%.

What did Garnett ever do to deserve this? The newest amusing tidbit found from SI.com’s Truth and Rumors section:

With Michael Olowokandi’s $6 million coming off the books in July, it looks as if the Celtics are positioning themselves to now trade Paul Pierce for a foundation piece—like say Kevin Garnett.—Detroit News

Wait a minute right there sports fans.  The Celtics next year may pair up Wally Szczerbiak and Kevin Garnett together again and the T-Wolves might bring back the duo of Paul Pierce and Ricky Davis?  Why didn’t Danny Ainge and Kevin McHale just trade jobs instead of trading players and making those guys buy new homes and find new schools for their kids?  I just found this rumor to be pretty hilarious, especially if this comes true.  Garnett must be going berserk at the thought of being paired up with Wally World again.  I can just imagine Garnett putting his acting skills to good work by imitating Al Pacino from Godfather part III subsequently suffering from a stroke: “Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in.”  Good luck KG.

Mad Catz Oakland Raiders XBOX controller
I was at Best Buy earlier today, and ran across a cool product that I wanted to share.  Apparently, Mad Catz has licensing rights for not only NFL teams, but also for MLB, NBA, Batman Begins, and Fantastic Four.  Best Buy had the PS2 controllers for $24.99 and the XBOX controllers from $29.99.  For you sports fans out there who happen to like video games,  this would be very tempting to buy.

2006 NBA All-Star weekend logoThis was the announcement I was waiting for, the participants for the slam dunk contest.  Sadly no Lebron James or Kobe Bryant, but at least Lebron gave a legitimate reason instead of claiming to rest a phantom injury.  He said that he is better at coming up with dunks on the fly during an actually ball game rather than thinking about it beforehand.  Vince Carter made the slam dunk competition exciting again a couple years back, and last year’s champ Josh Smith, who did some eye-opening dunks, will return to defend his crown.

The other three contestants will be Hakim Warrick of the Memphis Grizzlies, he hasn’t been able to show it much this year in the pros, but Warrick used to throw down some exciting slam dunks during his days in Syracuse.  Other participants are Philadelphia’s Andre Iguodala, and New York’s Nate Robinson.  Robinson’s dunks should surprise the crowd because he stands at a mere 5’9”, but even that might be a stretch.

Barry Bonds Reality Show? The proposed Barry Bonds reality show would run throughout the upcoming 2006 MLB season, and would be a documentary of sorts while Bonds attempts to break Hank Aaron’s all-time home run record.  Ugh, this would be a terrible idea, but then again the American viewer loves to watch people they hate, just look at Simon Cowell of American Idol, or Howard Stern.  Cameras for the proposed Barry Bonds show would be on and off the field.  Oh great - that is what Major League Baseball broadcasts needs, more idiotic cameras like the Fox catcher camera, audio mics on the bases, whoosh sounds in between replays, and in-game interviews with Bonds after at-bats where he is intentionally walked with a runner already on first.  We don’t need “Real World” style confessions where Bond’s family members discuss their frustration with pitchers walking Bonds, Bonds complaining about the batting order and the clean-up hitter leaving him stranded on base.  Hey Bonds, the last time you had a good batter behind you in the lineup for protection, you drove Jeff Kent out of town.

Fans purchasing Yao Ming, Tracy McGrady jerseys Wow, this was a surprising development to say the least.  According to retail sales as late of November 2005, T-Mac is the number one NBA jersey sold in China, followed by Reebok spokesmen Allen Iverson and Yao Ming.  Perhaps fans in China already own a few of Yao jerseys from his Shanghai Shark days, but one thing is we know for sure is Yao Ming is bringing NBA basketball to new heights in China.  Even when Houston Rocket games are not on, fans in China are still logging on the NBA Chinese official website and requesting to see other games like the Cleveland Cavaliers to see Lebron James.  To read about Yao’s economic impact around the globe, here is an interesting article.

Terrell Owens touchdown celebrationThe outspoken, controversial-yet-talented Terrell Owens met with Bronco’s coach Mike Shanahan last week.  Denver is looking to improve their passing game which was ranked 18th in the league to go with an already strong running game.  Denver’s current starting WR’s are 36 year old Rod Smith and inconsistent Ashley Lelie.  If Owens were to work out well in Denver, jerseys will fly off the shelves, QB Jake Plummer might elevate his game to a Pro Bowl level, and the wins would keep on coming.  The only negative I foresee would be the lack of touchdown dances, since Owens would have to conform to team rules and perform the “Mile High salute”.

Boston Red Sox logoI’ve been trying to get the pulse of Red Sox fans these days, and it is difficult to figure out.  The shock of losing CF Johnny Damon has worn off and I think they will get over it because they acquired Coco Crisp, who comes younger and cheaper and seems eager to play. The problem now is that they still don’t have a shortstop.  There is still time left before the season starts but right now Alex Cora is the starting SS. Boston went from having options at shortstop, to it being their most glaring weakness.  In the past three years they went through Nomar Garciaparra, Orlando Cabrera, Edgar Renteria, and had Hanley Ramirez waiting in the wings, and now all four are no longer with the team.  The majority of Red Sox fans were fed up with Renteria and did not want to give him another season to redeem himself.  On the positive side, at least they made a steal of a trade acquiring 2B Mark Loretta for back up catcher Doug Mirabelli.  They have an excess of starting pitching which is never a bad thing, in Arroyo, Beckett, Clemente, Wakefield, Schilling, and David Wells.  A decision also needs to be made as to who will catch games Wakefield pitches with personal catcher Mirabelli being shipped to the Padres.
