NFLPA decertifies, NFL owners lock out players
Posted by Dennis Velasco Categories: Athletes, Editorial, Front Office, News, NFL,
There was only a small bit of hope that came in the form of two deadline extensions to continue to negotiate, but it wasn't enough as the National Football League Players Association (NFLPA) led by DeMaurice Smith chose to decertify their union, allowing individual players to join together, not as a union, to sue the NFL owners. In turn, the NFL owners locked out their players from team facilities. No communication is allowed between players and the organization and its employees, such as coaches. Needless to say, the 2011 NFL season is now in jeopardy unless litigation can be settled quickly or somehow the two opposing sides can come to an agreement outside of court.

Reds prospect Devin Mesoraco making noise in Arizona
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, MLB,
The Cincinnati Reds seem to have a surplus of catching available to them. Most recently, Devin Mesoraco, their 2007 Draft Pick, has caused a few ripples in the organization. While playing behind Ramon Hernandez and Ryan Hanigan on the depth chart, Mesoraco is making it known that he’s gunning for a position in the big leagues, and it may be difficult for the Reds to deny him that right for much longer.

EndScore Report: Boo To Tiki Barber
Posted by Dennis Velasco Categories: Athletes, Championship, Super Bowl, Editorial, NFL,
Chris and DV talk about the merits of a Tiki Barber comeback - the history with his former team, the New York Giants, as well as what he can bring to a team and to what degree his impact would be. Considering the title, we don't think much about Barber. Especially when you consider the straight hating Barber has spewed towards Tom Coughlin and Eli Manning. Don't be mad because you quit a year before the Giants won the Super Bowl, Tiki. Anyway you can DL the ESR here!
Air Canada threatens to kill sponsorship with NHL
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Injuries, NHL, Rumors,
“Air Canada is a great brand, as is the National Hockey League, and if they decide that they need to do other things with their sponsorship dollars, that’s their prerogative.” That was NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman’s response to the threat from Air Canada to cancel their sponsorship deal with the NHL unless the latter implements harsher punishments for offenders who put others’ safety at risk with their style of play, such as with the hit issued by Zdeno Chara to Max Pacioretty in a game on Tuesday.

Michael Jordan Proclaims Derrick Rose as the NBA MVP
Posted by Dennis Velasco Categories: Athletes, NBA, News,
Multiple NBA MVP winner and current Charlotte Bobcats owner Michael Jordan named Chicago Bulls point guard Derrick Rose as this season's Most Valuable Player. Jordan, arguably and mostly thought of as the greatest NBA player ever, has won numerous awards during his career in the regular season, All-Star game, and NBA Finals, so if anyone should know how much better a player is than anyone else in the league, it's going to be Jordan.
"I wish man," Rose said. "It's great that he said that. It's an honor. I'm speechless. But I'm just trying to keep winning. The award will come if we keep winning. I'm just trying to play hard and aggressive and with an edge."
It's refreshing that Rose is as humble as he is, but his game has noticeably improved this season. He's shooting from beyond the arch more consistently, finding and setting up his teammates more often, and he's simply taking over games becoming a real presence on the floor. Rose has the Bulls in contention in the east, as well as possibly taking it all this postseason and run the table, winning an NBA championship. Something the team hasn't won since that Jordan guy played.

Chris and DV also talk about the Heat's chances to go far in the playoffs and whom they may have trouble with (see: Boston Celtics and Chicago Bulls). Zack Greinke to start on DL with injured rib
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, Injuries, MLB,
Due to an extreme game of pick-up basketball, Zack Greinke has a hairline fracture in a rib on the left side of his body and will likely start the MLB season on the disabled list. Fans of the right-hander in Milwaukee will have to wait a few more weeks before they see their new ace in a Brewers uniform. It’s the latest mini-tragedy for a team who has had more than their fair share of them over the last 30 years.

Ilya Kovalchuk taking New Jersey Devils up the standings
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, NHL,
In their last 25 games, the New Jersey Devils have recorded 42 out of a possible 50 points. This is the same team that only managed 22 points in their first 41 games. If the Ilya Kovalchuk nine-figure contract situation from last summer was the definition of “ridiculous,” this current run by the Devils to make an impact in the Eastern Conference must be the meaning of “absurd.”

Zdeno Chara receives no supplemental discipline for hit on Max Pacioretty
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, Injuries, NHL,
Montreal’s Max Pacioretty got a severe concussion and a broken neck. Boston’s Zdeno Chara got nothing. This was the outcome after Chara checked Pacioretty into the turnbuckle in Tuesday’s game between the two bitter rivals. Chara got a five-minute major for interference and a one-game misdemeanor because the NHL rulebook calls for it if the receiving player is injured. But no supplemental discipline is going to the Bruins’ monster blueliner. Pacioretty, on the other hand, may never fully recover, let alone play hockey again.

Former New York Giants player Tiki Barber coming out of retirement
Posted by Dennis Velasco Categories: Athletes, News, NFL,
Former New York Giants running back Tiki Barber has gotten the itch to play again and has filed papers to come out of retirement after not putting on the pads since 2006. He'll be 36-years-old in April, but does appear to still be in shape, not "game shape," though. Barber finished his 10-year NFL career (all with the Giants) with 10,449 rushing yards that include finishing five straight seasons with at least 1200 yards on the ground and a 4.7 yards per carry average. However, Barber's strength was his ability to also catch the ball out of the backfield (586 receptions for 5183 receiving yards) and could be a versatile weapon for whichever team decides to sign him. Could he return to the Giants? Well, they do own his rights, but Barber has spoken badly enough about the team that they'll probably be only too happy to let him go. With a rested body free of injury, as well as having proven great ability, Barber could do significant things.
