Texas Rangers are toeing the line
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Editorial, Front Office, MLB, Rumors,
At 87-75, the Texas Rangers finished second in the AL West, a distant 10 games behind the Los Angeles Angels. Their division is one of the stronger divisions in baseball. The Rangers’ record against teams in their own division was 30-27. They went 21-19 against the AL Central and 27-20 against the tough AL East division; the only team they had a losing record to was the New York Yankees. The Rangers also finished 9-9 in Interleague play. How does a team who does this well finish so poorly?

Jason Bay’s future is in his hands
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, Editorial, Front Office, MLB,
Is Jason Bay selling out? This is always a tough question to ask, and fans are often polarized by such a question. By not agreeing to any of the offers given to him by the Red Sox, he is testing the patience of the Boston fan base. Some would say that Bay is fully entitled to test the free agent market. He has earned the right to play where he wants and for as much money as he can get. Others would say that Bay has a good thing going in Boston. The fans love him, the team loves him, and he’s just plain good. Both arguments are correct. It just comes down to what Bay wants to do.

How to win a sports debate
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, Editorial, NBA, NFL, NHL,
There are two kinds of sports debates, the rules of which are often determined by the setting. The first is the carefully thought out, statistically-backed argument that usually takes place between two or three people, set anywhere from a living room to a restaurant to the workplace. The second is the spontaneous rambling that can include as many as ten friends or as few as one confused sports fan. This kind takes place almost anywhere drinks and sports are available simultaneously. Which debate is better? Let’s find the answer by comparing Alex Ovechkin and Sydney Crosby.

Blackhawks franchise built for the present
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Editorial, NHL,
The Chicago Blackhawks are tearing up the NHL. They’ve improved statistically in each of the last four seasons, and 2009-10 looks to be no exception. At 16-5-2, they have 34 points, and are on pace for 121 by season’s end. The not-so-secret of Chicago’s play is defense. In 23 games, they’ve allowed just 51 goals, the lowest total in the NHL. Only Buffalo and Boston have allowed less than 60 goals. They’ve also scored 77 goals, which ties them for second in the West.

True Predictions: So Much Good & Bad, Titans, and Patriots vs. Saints on MNF
Posted by Frank Nevarez Categories: Editorial, NFL,
Week Eleven proved profitable for me as I went 5-1 and run the season record to 32-20. Two upsets: Oakland Raiders over the Cincinnati Bengals and Kansas City Chiefs over the Pittsburgh Steelers weren’t even selected to predict since I figured the also-rans would have no shot. But I did have the feeling that the one-win wonders, the Cleveland Browns and the Detroit Lions, would deliver a close contest. A last second pass interference call in the end zone set up the Detroit victory. I got the expected wins by the Green Bay Packers, New York Giants, Indianapolis Colts and San Diego Chargers. My lone loss was due to Vince Young leading the Tennessee Titans to their fourth straight victory in a hard-fought match-up with the Houston Texans. The Texans needed to show they could be contenders (against a 3-6 team), but it just was not to be.
Dotel tests free agency… again
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, Editorial, Front Office, MLB,
Happy birthday to Octavio Dotel. He turns 35 years old today, and is now in a position to earn himself a very satisfying birthday present. After having spent the last two years with the Chicago White Sox, he is now temporarily without a team name on his jersey. Dotel, a right-handed reliever, has filed for free agency and will now soak in the offers from other clubs – and he will get his fair share of offers.

Holes in the Halos need filling
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, Editorial, Front Office, MLB,
With the MLB Awards now all handed out, the offseason can officially begin and teams can start re-tooling, re-shaping, or flat out re-building, and 2010 is already shaping up to be a huge question mark for the Los Angeles Angels. They have six players that have filed for free agency, some of which are among their best. Kelvim Escobar, Chone Figgins, Vladimir Guerrero, John Lackey, Darren Oliver, and Robb Quinlan are all on the open market looking for jobs, and the odds are that not all will return to the City of Angels.

The big-city boy returned home on Monday night. John Tavares, first-overall pick and first-line center of the New York Islanders led his team into Toronto for a game against the Maple Leafs – the same team that did “all they could” to acquire Tavares’ services after little John grew up in the Toronto suburbs admiring the Blue Buds. There was a massive media swarm focusing more on the return of the NHL star than the game itself; which is all that can be expected from these two sorry teams.

LaRoche leading first basemen in free agency
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, Editorial, Front Office, MLB,
First base is one of the toughest positions to fill offensively, but one of the easiest defensively. The notion that first base is a “power hitter’s position” makes it difficult for the teams to find a right fit. If a first baseman isn’t hitting 30+ home runs, fans call for the GM’s head. With only two “Type B” free agent first basemen in this year’s free agent crop in Nick Johnson and Adam LaRoche – eight and 25 home runs respectively – it’s slim pickings for teams looking to upgrade.

Early birds getting the worms
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, Editorial, Front Office, MLB,
In the mayhem that is sure to come with the sheer volume of free agents available this winter, some teams have taken a proactive approach to filling holes and adjusting to new strategies. In an interesting “swap” between two AL Central teams – the Kansas City Royals and Chicago White Sox – each addressed a need regarding third base. Mark Teahen was traded by the Royals to Chicago on Nov. 6 for second baseman Chris Getz and corner infielder Josh Fields. Almost a week later on Nov. 12, the Royals signed former White Sox three-bagger Wilson Betemit to a minor-league contract.
