Hisashi IwakumaThe Oakland Athletics are seriously trying to get over the hump. After a season that saw them without a losing record for the first time since 2006, they’re making the moves now that might help them get above the .500 mark and back to the postseason. With the continued success of the Angels and the sudden emergence of the Rangers, the Athletics certainly need to become more competitive if they hope to stay above water next season.

Zack GreinkeRoyals right-hander Zack Greinke still has two years left on a four-year deal he signed in 2009, but a lot of talk is coming out lately about Kansas City entertaining offers for the 27-year-old pitcher. Greinke, the 2009 American League Cy Young Award winner can fetch a great return. His 2010 totals – 4.17 ERA, 220 innings pitched, 181 strikeouts, 1.25 WHIP – were also rather impressive, considering the team playing behind him.

Tomas VokounYou know that Martin Brodeur has been one of the best goalies of our time, and that others such as Roberto Luongo and Tim Thomas are up among the top performers, but how much of the success of these three owes to the fact they play in hockey hotbeds? Compare them to one Tomas Vokoun, whose career currently with the Florida Panthers and formerly of the Nashville Predators goes largely unnoticed due to his winter home in the Sun Belt.

Brendan ShanahanAfter a one-year hiatus due to the Winter Olympics, the NHL All-Star Game returns in January with a completely new format. The NHL Players’ Association and NHL VP of Hockey and Business Development Brendan Shanahan have announced that this year’s festivities in Raleigh, N.C. will feature all-star teams not representative of the Eastern and Western conferences, but instead feature two squads hand-picked by a pair of captains, not dissimilar from how children select teams for games on residential streets before dinner.

Dale TallonLast week, the Florida Panthers General Manager Dale Tallon announced he wanted to discuss the possibility of implementing a coach’s replay challenge system at this week’s GM meetings in Toronto. The idea caught some air leading up to the discussion room, but it seems once the GMs got behind closed doors, Tallon’s suggestion was left out in the cold. The system would focus on goal challenges, but could be expanded to include penalty calls, missed calls, or anything else. In the end, it was just too broad.

Eric LindrosLast week a study was released showing that not only were the number of concussions up in junior hockey in Canada, but it was seven times higher than previously reported. The study followed two junior teams during the 2009-10 season and recorded 17 players that suffered 21 concussions during 52 games. This serves as a very real warning to players, coaches and even parents that hockey at the grassroots level can be just as dangerous as hockey in the NHL.

Ron WilsonThe Toronto Maple Leafs are struggling to win games lately, or as Leafs fans call it, performing to expectations. Leafs head coach Ron Wilson and GM Brian Burke have reportedly not had conversations about Wilson’s future, but after scoring just 15 goals in their last nine games, something is clearly wrong with Toronto, and as always, Wilson and his job have become the center of attention in the media. Wilson has struggled to find a winning lineup of players, but that may also result from an incredible lack of depth among his players.

Derek JeterIt’s hard to imagine that Derek Jeter began his MLB career 15 years ago. He’s become one of the most recognizable players in the game and will be for years, perhaps decades to come. Now, he finds himself in a position to negotiate for a new contract after finishing a 10-year, $189M deal. Of course, he’ll be dealing with his hometown New York Yankees, but for the first time in his career, his actual worth may fall below what his demands will be.

Bengie MolinaBengie Molina couldn’t lose in this World Series. Sure, his Texas Rangers did roll over to allow the San Francisco Giants to win their first World Series since moving out of the Polo Grounds, but Molina’s allegiance to both teams during this season gave him the right to wear a World Series ring regardless of how the series played out. Molina started the season with the Giants, but was sent to the Rangers to make room for Buster Posey behind the plate.
