Hannah Teter, Gretchen Bleiler
Hannah Teter took home the gold and Gretchen Bleiler won the silver medal in the half pipe competition.  Bleiler is well known for her modeling in FHM magazine. Teter and Bleiler were interviewed this morning on Cold Pizza, to the dismay of Jay Crawford.  The two girls seemed to be “high” on life, among other things, in the video conference interview.  More subtle evidence showed up when Jay Crawford asked them where would their next destination would be.  The girls mentioned Hawaii, where “Puff the Dragon” came from.  At the end of the segment Jay Crawford mentioned the bar has now been officially raised for guest interviews.

Ozzie Guillen not at the White HouseThere was some controversy when the 2005 MLB champion Chicago White Sox went to visit the White House yesterday.  They were without their manager Ozzie Guillen, who was criticized by the Chicago Mayor Richard Daley.  Guillen was backed by White Sox chairman Jerry Reinsdorf stating he has more than fulfilled his managerial duties last year and Guillen’s vacation was arranged prior to the planned trip to the White House.  Perhaps Guillen was a bit frightened at the prospect of being accidentally shot at by Vice President Dick Cheney.

U.S. skier Lindsey Kidlow crashesDownhill skier Lindsey Kildow gave her family and fans quite a scare, but managed to escape with just minor injuries to her hip.  She has not ruled out competing in the rest of the Olympic games.  Kildow crashed on her left hip at onto the course at about 50 mph during a pratice run.  What is interesting is that the Al Michaels/ Oswald the Rabbit trade has already reaped benefits for ABC/ Disney.  On ESPN.COM (whose parent company is ABC) there is now a mutual partnership with NBC, linking extended NBC coverage with a slideshow of the Kildow crash.

Villanova Wildcats logoConnecticut Huskies logoTonight on ESPN, catch the Connecticut Huskies take on the Villanova Wildcats at 7 p.m.  This will be the first meeting between the two teams this year.  Both teams are coming on strong this season, and may end up being #1 seeds in different regions of this year’s NCAA championship tournament.  The Big East has three strong, potential National title contenders in UConn, Villanova and West Virginia.  Many NBA scouts look at UConn forward Rudy Gay as a potential top 5 lottery pick in just his sophomore season.  While Villanova is led by a four guard attack in Randy Foye, Allen Ray, Kyle Lowry.  Mike Nardi hopes to participate after being sidelined the last two games with tonsillitis.  UConn has only one loss so far this season, and Villanova, playing at home tonight has two losses.

Sudden Death starring Jean-Claude Van DammeSad to see the NHL’s season being put on hold due to the Olympics?  Tired of seeing nothing but the Wayne Gretzky scandal everytime you tune into SportsCenter?  Rent the Jean-Claude Van Damme flick Sudden Death, a 1995 film, which shot during the 94-95 players strike.  Sudden Death in a nutshell is about an ex-fireman (Van Damme) trying to save the Vice-President and a stadium full of fans during the seventh game of the Stanley Cup finals from terrorists.  Sadastic hockey fans will get a kick out of evil-doer dressed up as the Pittsburgh Penguins mascot, “Icey” taking out an innocent security guard, and Van Damme ending up being the goalie for the Penguins and having to save the day on a penalty shot.

Kevin Martin heating upKevin Martin has a couple things working for him, the defenses focusing on Ron Artest and the green light to shoot away in the place of the injured Bonzi Wells.  For you NBA fantasy players out there in need of some scoring punch, Martin is your man.  In his last 11 games, he has hit the 20 point plus mark six times.  He shoots around 50% from the field this year, hits three pointers at least once a game, and grabs a few rebounds for you also.

Eddie Sutton out for remainder of the seasonCoach Eddie Sutton, one of the most successful coaches in college basketball with 794 wins, will sit out the remainder of the 2006 season.  This announcement comes after being involved in a car accident on Friday.  Sutton may have been under the influence of alcohol during the accident.  Sutton had led two Oklahoma State teams into the Final Four, once in 1995 and another in 2004.  The ‘95 team was led by Bryant “Big Country” Reeves, the recent 2004 team had strong guards in Tony Allen, (now of the Celtics) and John Lucas Jr.

The Big 12 Conference had other high-profile coaching news earlier this week, when Quinn Snyder resigned from his post as head coach for the Missouri Tigers after disappointing seasons the last couple of years.  Missouri’s last appearance in the NCAA tournament was in the ‘02-‘03 season, when they were knocked out in the second round by a Marquette team led by Dwayne Wade.

Michelle Kwan to sit out of 2006 OlympicsAfter coming up short for a gold medal in the 1998 and 2002 Olympic games, Kwan was determined to maintain her amateur eligibility for the 2006 games in Torino.  In the previous two Olympic games she was favored to win the gold medal, but ended up settling for a silver in the 1998 Nagano games and a bronze medal in the 2002 Salt Lake City games.

Kwan mentioned not having any regrets, she has had a great career that included 9 US championships and 5 world championships.  Kwan did not participate in this years U.S. Nationals due to a groin injury and the same injury is keeping her from being at 100% for the Olympics.  She did not want to participate without being as healthy as possible.  She will replaced by Emily Hughes, who was placed 3rd in the U.S. Nationals. This is a change, as the norm sees the top two skaters competing in the Olympics.

James Blake's girlfriend, Jennifer ScholleWe all knew this was going to happen, after watching the American public oogle over tennis hotties Anna Kournikova and Maria Sharapova.  Tennis is now trying to turn into a eye-candy sport to spur new interest from the top demographic, men of all ages.  The next hot thing in the gossip columns maybe Jennifer Scholle.  She first came on the scene to the publics eye during this past summers US Open, while James Blake made his comeback and eventually lost to Andre Agassi in the Quarterfinals in 5 sets, with the fifth set going into a tie-breaker.  Scholle was on screen numerous times in between points during all of Blake’s matches.  Anna Benson now has some competition on her hands as the most talked about woman in sports.

Epiphanny Prince vs. Kobe Bryant, oh pleaseThe Sporting News magazine ran a little graphic on a Bryant/ Prince comparison on their To Know List, which is the 8 hottest topics   of the week.  If this was supposed to be a joke, but I found myself to be pretty offended.  The comparison was to slight Bryant and his “selfish” play, but even in humorous tone, there is always some underlying truth behind the joke.

They called Bryant’s 81 points “comparatively wussy” to Prince’s 113.  “Prince - Expert analysis: Yes! Bryant - Oh, please”.  Let me first off say, Prince’s individual accomplishment was criticized by the opponent’s coach, and instructed for his players not to play defense in the second half, in response to Prince and her Murry Bergtraum team running up the score.  The Jordan comparison, I don’t find the humor in implying Prince is a closer comparison to Michael Jordan than Kobe Bryant is.  Next time they want to recognize individual accomplishments, they should use better taste and actually praising the individual rather than ridiculing them.
