Nick FolignoThe Ottawa Senators are looking to build upon a 94-point season last year that resulted in a first-round exit, and part of that is deciding who their top-six forwards will be. They have five. The last spot has been a tough battle between Nick Foligno and Peter Regin. They’re competing for the left-winger job beside Mike Fisher and Alex Kovalev. While Regin was the popular choice before the pre-season began, Foligno has made a strong case and may snipe the job away from Regin.

After 15 long years for the fans of the Cincinnati Reds, the team clinched a playoff appearance and will play during the 2010 MLB postseason.  The Reds winning the NL Central was a surprise to many as they have a young and inexperienced team, but with the development of some players such as Joey Votto, an MVP candidate, and Travis Wood, the Reds now have a chance to go for it all and win a World Series.

Peyton ManningAccording to Indianapolis Colts President Bill Polian, it looks like the NFL season will expand from 16 games to 18 games.  This isn’t official yet as both the owners and players association will need to approve this change, but at this juncture, it seems like a formality.  Polian is a member of the NFL’s competition committee and a former league executive, so his words during his weekly radio show carry some weight.  How do you feel about the change?  Leave your comments below!

A.J. BurnettAs the New York Yankees limp into the playoffs, the teams they’ll face are preparing for the postseason by resting their veterans and getting their rotations in order. Playoff baseball is nothing new to New York, but having a questionable pitching staff is. In the last few weeks, only CC Sabathia has been a reliable starter for the Yankees; the rest have been average at best. When the Yankees get through with Game 1, will the rest of their pitchers be able to get them through the next couple?

Mark StreitMark Streit’s season may be over before it started. The Islanders’ defenseman will likely miss six months after injuring his shoulder during an intrasquad game after being hit by Matt Moulson and falling into the boards. Streit will undergo surgery to repair what initially appears to be a torn labrum and torn rotator cuff, but he may also have suffered a dislocation. The Islanders will have to scramble to find somebody who can fill Streit’s skates and hopefully do at least half the job that he did.

Cliff LeeThe Rays are currently holding tough onto the AL East title while the Yankees keep pace with them in the Wild Card position. Yeah, technically Boston can still make the postseason, but let’s face reality; we know who the American League playoff teams will be. Minnesota has already clinched the Central and the Rangers have taken the West with relative ease. All that remains to be decided; with a week of baseball left; is who will play whom.

Carmelo Anthony versus the New Jersey Nets

Carmelo Anthony may soon be joining the New Jersey Nets if he agrees to sign a contract extension, therefore leaving the Denver Nuggets, a team he’s played for for seven seasons.  The trade includes the Utah Jazz and Charlotte Bobcats as well with the primary players being moved being Andrei Kirilenko and Derrick Favors to the Nuggets and Devin Harris to the Bobcats.  Rumors have the Nuggets holding out, hoping for a better deal, but considering they’re not in a position to rescind trades since Anthony will most assuredly leave the team after the season at the latest, expect the only hold-up being Anthony agreeing to an extension with the Nets.

Sidney CrosbyWhen the NHL started its “Winter Classic” tradition a few years ago, it received a lot of praise for coming up with a style of game that embraced its roots and actually generated some interest in hockey from those who normally wouldn’t dare ever watch the ice-bound sport. This year, they’re hoping to build on its success by pitting the game’s two biggest players – Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin – against each other. Also, they’ve tapped HBO to create a reality series documenting the road leading up to January’s outdoor game.

Felix HernandezIn Thursday’s historic game at Rogers Centre in Toronto, many fantastic accomplishments were achieved. Jose Bautista hit his 50th home run of the season, becoming just the 26th player ever to do so, as well as the first Blue Jay. Ichiro Suzuki rapped two hits, including a single to center field that was his 200th of the season, marking 10 straight years of 200-hits for Ichiro; the first time that’s ever been done by an MLB player. However, some achievements will fly under the radar: the pitching performances.

John TavaresThe NHL preseason began last night with nine games on the schedule, but we’re still a couple of weeks away from actual hockey. To those who paid attention, they saw a number of guys they’ve never seen before, and the names that they did recognize they may not see again for a number of days. Many of the players will be fortunate (or unfortunate) to play as many as half of their preseason games, and the fans are the ones who will suffer for it.
