Dallas Cowboys rookie receiver Dez Bryant not a regular rookie

Dallas Cowboys rookie wide receiver Dez Bryant will not act like a normal rookie. His refusal to carry veteran wide receiver Roy Williams’ shoulder pads after Sunday’s practice was a big act of defiance, although his reasons in doing so is valid. Bryant said that he was with the Cowboys to play football and win, not carry another player’s pads. However, as much sense as that makes, it’s a known tradition that rookies get hazed to some degree and by not carrying Williams’ pad, Bryant will be looked at differently by his teammates. Bryant better perform on the field to have everyone look past this indiscretion. By the way, Bryant is competing with Williams for a starting position. Drama in Dallas indeed.

Blake Hawksworth’s name is not one you should know. Yet. The 27-year-old right-handed pitcher is throwing from the number four spot in the St. Louis Cardinals’ rotation, and while his season isn’t going as wonderfully as he may have hoped, to be where he is now is a testament to his character. His career has been a roller coaster ride with glowing scouting reports and devastating injuries. As soon as he settles down and finds some direction, he may wind up as one of the best hurlers in baseball.

After there being some hints that Terrell Owens might be joining the Cincinnati Bengals, the St. Louis Rams have now come into play. While it would be a coup to have Owens on the Rams to help rookie quarterback, Sam Bradford, it wouldn’t make sense for Owens if he wants to win and contend for a Super Bowl. By most measurements, the Rams stink. The Bengals would be a lot better destination for Owens, but will the Bengals come through with an offer? Chad Ochocinco and Carson Palmer probably hope so.

Kyle Davies had to be feeling a little extra pressure on Saturday afternoon. Not only was he just pitching against the New York Yankees, but Alex Rodriguez was among those he would face. Going into the game, Rodriguez was at a well-publicized 599 career home runs and looking for elusive number 600. What must have made things a little worse for Davies was the fact that he was the man off whom Rodriguez blasted homer number 500.

Could Terrell Owens be joining the Cincinnati Bengals

Cincinnati Bengals QB Carson Palmer has been working out with free agent wide receiver Terrell Owens and has been impressed. The Bengals current number one wide receiver, Chad Ochocinco, is a close friend with Owens and both have reality television shows that are back-to-back on VH1. He’s been outspoken about Owens joining the team and considers himself Robin to Owens’ Batman, as he tweeted (pic included). Are all of these hints that one of the greatest receivers of all time could be joining the Bengals offense? It’s quite possible and could help the team score more points as defenses would have to worry about both Ochocinco and TO, which would probably lead to man-to-man and a lot of TDs.

Breaking down San Diego Padres closer Heath Bell

If there were an award for Closer of the Year, San Diego’s Heath Bell would be a top candidate to take home the National League version of the hardware. Through July 24, Bell has been called upon to close out 31 games for the Padres and has been successful 28 times; averaging seven each month throughout the season. In fact, the last time he couldn’t get the job done was on May 26, when St. Louis touched him up for a run in a game the Padres ended up winning in 13 innings.

Philadelphia Phillies J.A. Happ: Trade Bait or Keeper?

J.A. Happ is all over the place lately. The Phillies will likely lose 47-year-old starter Jamie Moyer to the disabled list with an elbow injury, and Happ seems to be the most likely candidate to replace him, but Happ’s name has been linked with several other teams that he’s been shopped to, including the Houston Astros, because the Phillies have shown interest in Roy Oswalt and are willing to part with last year’s NL Rookie of the Year runner up.

Lou Piniella retiring as manager at end of season

Lou Piniella announced his retirement earlier today, effective not so immediately. The Cubs’ manager will give up the helm of a team for a final team at the end of this season, putting an end to a 23-year career that saw him captain five teams, winning one World Series and three Manager of the Year Awards. Piniella will join the likes of Atlanta’s Bobby Cox and Toronto’s Cito Gaston as members of a wiser generation to be calling it quits in 2010.

New Jersey Devils and Ilya Kovalchuk contract rejected by the NHL

So the NHL made another controversial, media-frenzy-inducing move; it’s just another day at the New York office. With the announcement that they rejected the New Jersey Devils-Ilya Kovalchuk contract worth $102 million over 17-years, this summer’s biggest hockey storybook was given a new chapter. Details why the NHL did not like the deal are tentative, but so far the reasoning says that the deal was rejected “on the grounds that it circumvents the NHL’s salary cap.”

Josh Beckett’s return bodes well for the Boston Red Sox

With a 2-1 win over Oakland on Monday night, the Boston Red Sox have now won four of their last 12 games. They have fallen behind both the Yankees and the Rays in the AL East and are one more string of losses away from being out of it; considering the level of competition in their division at least. But with almost a dozen regulars out with injuries, the Red Sox are still in a surprisingly good position.
