Ryan HowardWith a 10th inning game-winning home run by Carlos Ruiz, the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Florida Marlins and became Major League Baseball’s hottest team. After an unexpectedly slow start to the season, the Phillies have turned their fortunes around and are making a strong push for a playoff berth and not even a slew of midseason injuries seem to be slowing them down. In fact, as more players go down, the team as a whole appears to become strong in subsequent games.

Chris SaleChris Sale has become the fastest player to go from a draft to the major leagues since Ryan Wagner in 2003. The Chicago White Sox picked Sale 13th overall in the 2010 MLB Draft then signed him quickly, despite reservations from teams with higher selections that Sale might be a tough sign. He started in high A-Winston Salem and moved quickly through to triple-A Charlotte before getting the call to Chicago’s South Side before Wednesday’s game against the Tigers.

Alex RodriguezAnother day, another oh-fer for Alex Rodriguez. The Yankees third baseman continues to chase home run number 600. A-Rod has been stuck on 599 for almost two weeks and in that time, interest in him achieving that milestone has been overshadowed by interest in him not hitting it. Countless numbers of pictures have been taken of Rodriguez’s swings, but not one has been truly worth anything, and the annoyance is starting to show as of late.

Jeremy HellicksonJust three years ago, the Tampa Bay Rays were the laughing stock of the American League. With a World Series appearance in 2008, they served notice that the kids were finally ready to compete with the Yankees and the Red Sox, leapfrogging in talent over Baltimore and Toronto.  While not exactly baseball’s biggest stage, the Rays served notice again that their system is still full of talent when they brought up pitcher Jeremy Hellickson to make a start against the Minnesota Twins on Monday night.

Antti NiemiThe Chicago Blackhawks have made their decision. Rookie-turned sophomore goaltender Antti Niemi will not return to Chicago and veteran Marty Turco will don the red and black jersey for the defending Stanley Cup champions in the upcoming 2010-11 season. The Hawks turned down Niemi’s $2.75 million salary that was awarded by an arbitrator. The Hawks tried to find a way to justify the money, but after an $826,875 rookie contract, it was too difficult to fit the dramatic price tag increase under the salary cap.

Scott PodsednikScott Podsednik is moving west… again. The 34-year-old outfielder was traded by the Kansas City Royals to the Los Angeles Dodgers. This will be Podsednik’s sixth major league team that he has played for, including two stints with the White Sox. The Dodgers picked up the veteran while giving back two prospects – catcher Lucas May and right-hander Elisaul Pimentel – to the Royals. Podsednik made his Dodgers debut on Thursday night, going 0-for-3 with a walk, strikeout, stolen base and error.

Chris CoghlanIt has been a strange week for injuries. After Sunday’s Marlins victory over the Braves, the reigning NL Rookie of the Year, Chris Coghlan, torn a meniscus in his left knee while delivering a celebratory pie to the face of one of his teammates. Coghlan is now on the disabled list, and it’s not sure if he’ll even play ball again this season. If surgery is not required immediately, Coghlan will be able to take the field again, but you know everybody will be thinking of that left knee and how it will affect his play.

Jose BautistaThe major league home run leader increased his total by two on Tuesday night, as he mashed a three- and two-run home run against the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday night. Toronto’s Jose Bautista has now broken the 30-home run mark and the Jays continue to put other teams on notice that he’s available. In fact, the Jays are listening to offers for a quarter of their roster, all of whom are moveable, but in Bautista’s case, it would not be a wise decision to ship him out of the city by the end of this week.

Matt GarzaWhen the media dubbed 2010 “The Year of the Pitcher,” they weren’t kidding. Tampa Bay’s Matt Garza continued the spectacular season for hurlers on Monday night by throwing the fifth no-hitter of the year. Garza joined Ubaldo Jimenez and Edwin Jackson in mere no hitters, as well as Dallas Braden and Roy Halladay who have both been perfect this season. Throw in Armando Galarraga’s 28-out not-quite-perfect game and you have one heck of a season, and it’s still July.

Ilya KovalchukThe Ilya Kovalchuk saga continued when the NHLPA filed a grievance on behalf of the reluctant free agent. After the deal was rejected by the NHL five days ago, the NHLPA had until 5 p.m. ET on Monday to file the grievance. They did and still had a couple of hours to spare for a late lunch. Now an independent arbitrator will be given the task of deciding whether or not the NHL’s decision was justified.
