iPad 2 to sport carbon fiber, NFC, and a 7-inch option?

Our friends at iLounge got a few new tidbits relating to the iPad 2, which are interesting to say the least, but should be taken with a grain of salt. First, Apple has been toying with the idea of using carbon fiber for the casing of the next iPad. Carbon fiber is strong, but also very lightweight, and this would be a move to make the iPad much lighter than the original (which was a complaint from many.) Second, Apple is considering throwing NFC technology into the iPad 2. We think this one is pretty much a lock, as it will allow Apple to tap into a huge revenue stream. Last, Apple is reportedly still tossing around the idea of a 7-inch version of the iPad. Steve Jobs recently trashed this idea, saying that all the 7-inch tablets out there were pretty much dead on arrival because they were too small. We don't buy that, because, well, look at the iPod touch. It's pretty much a 3.5-inch tablet. Still, we aren't gonna hold out hope for a 7-inch iPad to roll around this April.

As we reported earlier today, Steve Jobs has taken another medical leave of absence from Apple.
So what happens now? That's the exact question that the world seeks answers for in the wake of this morning's announcement. What we do know is certain: Tim Cook, chief operating officer, will be at the helm for the companies major product launches going forward.
What we don't know is, well, everything else. But Jobs' unexpected health announcement does shed new light on recent Apple dealings as of late and, more importantly, comes with a few givens for the future.

Steve Jobs taking another medical leave of absence from Apple

Almost two years to the day from when Steve Jobs took medical leave from Apple to get a liver transplant, he has announced that he will be taking leave yet again to deal with his health. Just like last time, Steve will remain as CEO of Apple, and will be very involved in the major strategic decisions for the company. Tim Cook will take over day-to-day operations. It's unknown at this time whether the issues are related to Steve's bout with pancreatic cancer back in 2004, or the 2009 liver transplant, but whatever it is, we wish him a speedy and full recovery. Verizon iPhone 4: Available February 10 for $199

This morning Verizon officially and formally announced the availability of the iPhone on their Verizon Wireless network. "Today we're partnering with a giant of the industry, and that's Apple." At a special press event dedicated to the announcement, the company said that they've been working with Apple for two years, the last of which was spent testing a CDMA version of the iPhone to ensure that it would perform as expected on the Verizon network. The Verizon iPhone 4 will launch on February 10th (pre-orders for existing Verizon Wireless customers start on February 3rd,) and it will cost the same $199 that AT&T charges, with two-year contract.
One significant difference that Verizon is offering that AT&T doesn't--the Verizon iPhone 4 will act as a mobile hotspot, allowing up to five devices to tether to the phone over Wi-Fi to use its data connection.
Mac App Store opens with 1,000 apps, 1 million downloads on first day

Yesterday, the Mac App Store, the new portal for Mac users to download application, opened up to the public as part of the Mac OS X 10.6.6 update. After installing the update, a new icon will appear, giving you access to the new store. In it, you'll find the familiar interface shown on iOS devices, and even in iTunes itself. Apps are categorized by type, like business, education, and finance. There's also a "Top Free" and "Top Paid" list. Once bought, downloading and installing an app is straight forward. You can also redownload the app if you delete it, and once you buy it, you can install it on all your other Macs. Another benefit of the App Store is the update process. Like on iOS, all the updates can be found on the App Store, and you can update all your applications in a single click. Some of the early users did report a few issues, like an "Error 100" that keeps popping up, which can be resolved by signing in and out of your account and restarting your computer.
This morning, Apple announced that they've surpassed one million downloads from the Mac App Store in just the first 24 hours. “We’re amazed at the incredible response the Mac App Store is getting,” said Apple CEO Steve Jobs. They've definitely hit the ground running.

Time Reveals Person of the Year Candidates

Imagine Glenn Beck, Jon Stewart, Mark Zuckerberg and LeBron James on the same list. Time magazine has named them all, along with many others, as their potential Person of the Year.
Stewart is nominated jointly with fellow Comedy Central host Stephen Colbert. Also on the list: the Unemployed American, Steve Jobs, Nancy Pelosi, Sarah Palin and President Barack Obama.
Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the prime minister of Turkey, is currently leading Time’s online nomination poll. In second place? Lady Gaga.

iTunes 10 now available

Earlier at today’s fall music event, Steve Jobs announced that iTunes 10 would be available today. Well, it took them a while—close to ten hours in fact—but it’s finally available for download. As we mentioned earlier, iTunes 10 features the Ping social network, cheaper TV show rentals, improved iPhone/iPad/iPod syncing, and AirPlay support. You can download it now.

iPod nano redesign: Multitouch, tiny, $149 8GB, $179 16GB

In addition to all the other news coming out of Apple’s fall music event, the company announced a complete redesign of the iPod nano. The click-wheel is gone, as is a lot of the display size, as Apple instead focused on making this thing more like an iPod shuffle with a multitouch display. The new nano is 46% smaller and 42% lighter than the previous model, and while it gains multitouch and what appears to be a modified version of iOS, it loses the video camera (of course, if you want an iPod with a video camera, the new iPod touch meets that need.) Apple says the battery on the nano will provide 24 continuous hours of audio playback, and the device is available in seven colors. You can get the 8GB model for $149, or the 16GB nano for $179. Pre-orders are live now, and they ship in a week.

Apple announces new Apple TV with cheap content rentals, Netflix

This morning Apple announced their new update to the Apple TV platform at their fall music event. Since the launch of the Apple TV in 2006, Apple has always maintained that the device and platform were just a “hobby.” With today’s update at the fall music event the focus was on bringing Hollywood movies and TV shows to the device, offering everything in HD, and lowering prices on the content. The new device is 75% smaller, and there’s really not much more to say about the actual hardware. However, the changes that most would care about are on the software and service side of things. HD television show rentals are now just $0.99, which is $2 cheaper than they used to be. You can also rent high definition movies, on the day and date that they are available on DVD, for $4.99. If you’re a Netflix subscriber, you can use the Apple TV to access your Instant Queue as well.The device focuses on streaming rather than syncing, and will be available at the end of September, in about four weeks. You can pre-order one today for $99.
