Leaked Samsung Galaxy S III surfaces in Vietnam

Normally we wouldn’t trust leaks that come out of Asia since you have to take them with a grain of salt due to the fact that there are so many realistic fakes out there, but on occassion, there are some newsworthy items. Such is the case for the Samsung Galaxy S III, which was spotted on Vietnamese site Tinhte.
Currently, the smartphone goes by the mundane name of GT-I9300. However, if Samsung plans on sticking to its current naming scheme it’ll be called the Galaxy S III, and it should be fantastic. According to Tinhte, the phone boasts a 4.6-inch display with 720 x 1184 resolution. The phone is powered by a quad-core 1.4 GHz processor running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich smoothly. The phone features 1 GB of RAM and 16 GB of built-in storage that's expandable using the micro SD slot. For those that are addicted to Instagram, you’ll be able to shoot away using the 8 megapixel camera, and the phone is also equipped with NFC.
Since this is a prototype, expect the external look of the phone may change slightly. We’re assuming that Samsung will drop the tacky plastic rim around the handset, for example. Samsung has gone on the record by neither denying nor claiming the GT-I9300 as the next Galaxy S III, only stating “We will be able to tell you more at the 2012 Samsung Mobile Unpacked.” So we’ll just have to wait and see. However, once in awhile, just like a one-hit-wonder song hits the radio waves, a great phone from outlier manufacturer can make people take notice. Right now, Huawei is such a company.

During Mobile World Congress, Huawei introduced the world’s fastest quad-core smart phone, the Huawei Ascend D. The New Apple iPad: Retina Display, 4G LTE, A5X processor, $499 on March 16th

Apple announced the new iPad at this morning's iPad event, and it looks like a stellar upgrade. What can you expect to find in the updated Apple tablet? Well, pretty much everything that we thought we'd see. The new iPad sports a 2048x1536 Retina Display, the highest resolution display that Apple has ever shipped, and that's ever shipped on any portable device. It's also packing in 4G LTE, compatible with both Verizon's 4G LTE network and AT&T's newer (and smaller) 4G LTE network as well. It's got a FaceTime camera on front like before, but this time the rear camera is 5 megapixels and can record in 1080p. Running the show under the hood is the new Apple A5X processor, which has a quad-core graphics chip. In an interesting note from the event, Mike Capps from Epic Games mentioned that the new iPad has a higher screen resolution and more memory than the Xbox 360 and PS3. The iPad also supports dictation with the press of the microphone key on the soft keyboard, similar to what you find on the iPhone 4S. Unfortunately, no mention was made of Siri integration.
The new iPad goes on sale on March 16th (next Friday!) and will sell for $499 for 16 GB, $599 for 32 GB, and $699 for 64 GB Wi-Fi models. If you want the 4G versions, the prices are $629, $729, and $829 respectively. You can pre-order one today from Apple.
iOS 5.1 beta shows that quad-core processors are coming to iPad and iPhone

It's expected that Apple's next mobile iOS processor, which will likely be called the A6, will debut alongside the new iPad 3 that should be introduced sometime in the next month or two. Today we're learning that the latest iOS 5.1 beta includes processing core management controls that support both dual-core and quad-core chips. One would of course conclude that the expectation here is that the A6 processor will be a quad-core chip. There's nothing more than rumor for now, but it definitely wouldn't surprise us, based on Apple's update cycle. There are already quad-core Android tablets floating around, and we find it a little hard to believe (though not impossible) that Apple would stick witha dual-core chip rather than iterating to a quad-core design for the next iPad and the iPhone 5.

Bleeding Edge TV 410: Apple iMac RAM upgrade tutorial

In this episode we teach you how to install RAM in your Apple iMac. The model we are using is the 27-inch 2011 iMac, which has a quad-core processor and supports up to 4 RAM chips. Installing your own RAM is an easy way to save a lot of money, rather than paying for the extra RAM with the iMac. In our case, we install 16 GB of RAM in under 5 minutes, saving ourselves over $500 in the process - and it is so easy that anyone can do it, and all you need is a Philips screwdriver and a little courage.
As you see in the video, all you need to do is unscrew the RAM cover, and pull on the tabs to remove the RAM that ships with the iMac. From there, you simple insert the new RAM, push it in until it clicks, and reinstall the cover. Turn it on, and go into About This Mac to get a look at the amount of RAM that your system is recognizing. If it is showing the amount you installed, you are done! Even better, you just saved yourself a bunch of cash as well. You can pick up the RAM at Amazon for a great price, and of course, the iMac is there as well.

New Apple iMac brings Thunderbolt, next-gen quad-core processors

Today, Apple announced updated iMac desktops with second-generation Intel Core processors and Thunderbolt interconnect technology. The new iMacs are available in the familiar 21.5-inch and larger 27-inch form factors, starting at $1,199 for the 21.5-inch model with an Intel Core i5, AMD Radeon HD 6750M graphics, and a 500GB hard drive.
Thunderbolt is Apple's implementation of Intel's Lightpath interconnect technology, first seen on Apple's MacBook Pro laptops. As before, Thunderbolt on the iMac is compatible with USB, FireWire, and Gigabit Ethernet via adapters. Thunderbolt supports mini DisplayPort monitors without an adapter, and can support (via adapters) VGA, DVI, HDMI, and full-sized DisplayPort with an adapter. Thunderbolt has a theoretical 10Gbps throughput, so it can accommodate all of these interconnects simultaneously using only one port. The iMac 21.5-inch models come with one Thunderbolt port, while the 27-inch features two Thunderbolt ports.
On the software side, all new iMacs come with Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, along with Apple's iLife '11 software (iPhoto, iMovie, iTunes, GarageBand, etc.). New for the iMac line is the inclusion of FaceTime HD, which allows video chat with FaceTime equipped iPhone 4, iPod Touch, and iPad 2 devices.
All iMacs are EPEAT Gold certified and meet Energy Star 5.2 requirements. The iMac's LED backlit display is mercury free and Apple uses PVC free cables and components. The new iMacs use Apple's familiar aluminum and glass chassis, and come with a SD card slot, wireless keyboard, and a choice of Apple's Magic Mouse or Magic Trackpad.
The new iMacs are available now through Apple Stores, store.apple.com, and authorized Apple Retailers. The base 21.5-inch iMac starts at $1,199 and $1,499, the base 27-inch iMac starts at $1,699 and $1,999. Configure to order options include high end Intel Core i7 processors, 2TB hard drives, 256GB SSD, additional system memory, and AppleCare.
If you're not looking for the latest and greatest, new iMacs also mean that there will be a ton of cheap iMacs hitting eBay.
NVIDIA shows off quad-core Tegra tablet processors

Nvidia announced some new Tegra chips aimed at powering some upcoming tablets and smartphones this week. The code-named "Kal-El" chips are able to display some amazingly high def video streams, both on the devices displays and on large TVs. In the demonstration, the stream was being decoded on a developmental device, scaled down to that tablet's screen at 1366 x 768 resolution, and displayed on a connected 30-inch, 2560 x 1600 TV. The company says tablets with the new chips should come out around August, with phones following for the Holidays. Check out videos at the link below.

CES 2008 Video: Pat Moorhead on AMD Smart House and CPU Roadmap

We talk to AMD‘s Marketing VP, Pat Moorhead about the Smart House “portal” they had set up at CES. In contrast to our last post, they were much more open this time and let me ask just about any questions I asked, including questions about their roadmap and some very cool details about their new “Black” edition, incredibly overclocker-friendly CPU. We also learn more about their mobile device chipset and hear that we’ll be able to output HD content from cell phones and other mobile devices running on ATI chips within the next year or so, straight to an HDTV. Cool stuff.
