HP TouchPad discontinued after 49 days
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Smartphones, Corporate News, Handhelds,
Today HP announced that it is killing webOS hardware, including the TouchPad and Palm Pre and Veer smartphones. We will have more on that later, but the company seems upset that the phones and tablet haven't gained traction as fast as they expected it to. The TouchPad started selling on July 1, and just 49 days later, HP has killed it. Such a shame.

HP TouchPad Unveiled
Posted by John Kilhefner Categories: Corporate News, Handhelds,
Seems like Palm HP is finally getting its act together, or synergized if you will, as it pertains to webOS. A slew of new platforms running the multitasking beast that is webOS have officially been unveiled, and the outcome is satisfactory to say the least. The TouchPad tablet in particular is especially impressive, and offers just as much (and more) than other tablets we’ve seen lately.
The TouchPad specs include: webOS 3.0, a 9.7-inch display, a 1.2Ghz Qualcomm Snapdragon dual-CPU APQ8060 processor, 1024x768 resolution, 1GB RAM, 16/32GB storage, 1.3 MP front camera, 3G and 4G variants, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, gyroscope, accelerometer, and a weight of 740 grams. Also, HP's TouchPad comes equipped with Flash capabilities and Beats audio. The TouchPad appeals to professionals with an on-screen QWERTY keyboard for on-the-go editing of Word and Excel files, as well as Powerpoint and PDF functionality.

WebOS 2.0 running on the Palm Pre Plus
Posted by John Kilhefner Categories: Smartphones, Handhelds, Software, Videos,
While existing Palm Pre users are still eagerly checking the Updates app for the webOS 2.0 overhaul, HP is taking their sweet time delivering the goods. Progress is being made apparently (read: bait is being dangled in front of Pre users), as a new video shows the Palm Pre Plus running webOS 2.0. Check it out above.
WebOS 2.1 for existing Pre users?
Posted by John Kilhefner Categories: Smartphones, Software,
Many of us eager Palm Pre users - and yes, even you Pixi users - have been twiddling our thumbs (read "breaking stuff") waiting for the webOS 2.0 OTA update to hit our phones. Much to our dismay, Palm has only offered solace in saying that "the coming months" will roll out webOS 2.0 to the dedicated Palm smartphone users. However, a ray of light has shined through, in the form of a beta OS running on the original Palm Pre showcasing additional features.
The beta, labeled "HP webOS Nova-Barley," is marked as version 2.0.1 and features voice dialing and new preferences for Exhibition View. True to beta form there are some perfomance kinks to be ironed out, and a final OTA update is rumored (very likely) to be the 2.1 version of webOS. We'll see whether or not this news will be enough to keep Pre die-hards from jumping the webOS ship into the iOS, Android, or even WP7 waters. As for me, I'm still hanging on to my Pre, but it's not getting any lighter, HP!

Become Palm’s spokesperson
Posted by John Kilhefner Categories: Smartphones, Videos,
The masked maniac known previously as “The Defender” of the webOS community is back, and this time he wants to sell some phones...crazy style. Apparently, he sent in an audition tape to HP, err, Palm (or is it the other way around??) pretty much telling them that he is going to be their spokesperson. And to prove that point, he brought some clips! HPalm is really trying to get the community involved to spread the word of webOS 2.0 and the Palm Pre 2 by getting fans to post their own videos on YouTube. Palm will highlight their favorite videos, thus immortalizing you in fifteen minutes of internet stardom! Check out the masked man's own proposal above.

Palm reveals WebOS 2.0
Posted by John Kilhefner Categories: Smartphones, Software,
If there were an award for most underrated OS than Palm’s webOS would certainly be giving an acceptance speech. However, Palm is looking to tailor a new acceptance speech for ‘best OS around’ by introducing webOS 2.0. The new features slated for the upgrade are momentous to say the least, and with any luck HP will be able to help put Palm’s webOS where it should be in the smartphone market.
Stacks
Improving upon the already prolific multi-tasking capabilities of webOS, version 2.0 will make cards even more intuitive and easier to sort through. WebOS 2.0 will expand upon the card scheme of the original OS, but will introduce “stacking” into the mix. This will enable groups of cards to be kept in piles related to one another in order to minimize clutter and maximize efficiency. For instance, if you go to open a link in your Facebook app, it will become stacked within that group, and can be arranged and sorted as you please. Developers will even find that their applications will automatically be grouped by Stacks, requiring them to make no special changes to their applications.

HP buys Palm, we want a webOS Slate
Posted by Dan Hughes Categories: Smartphones, Corporate News, Handhelds, Software,
Palm, that company that used to run the handheld business, after several attempts to solicit buyers/license its software to any bidders/play music on corners with its hat out for tips, finally has a new home. HP announced yesterday that it will purchase Palm, Inc. to the tune of $1.2 billion.
Several companies, including big-boy-in-the-market phone manufacturer HTC, took a look at Palm and passed. The webOS PDA platform that Palm has created, while beautiful and functional in its own right, just was not enticing enough to garner a lot of suitors in the smartphone market.
