Corning Gorilla Glass 3 review

We were able to check in with Corning to get a look at Gorilla Glass 3, the upcoming product that should be hitting the next generation of major smartphones later this year. If you use a smartphone or tablet, you probably want glass that is super-strong and holds up to in-pocket scratches, and shocks like being dropped. No one wants a cracked screen, right? That's where Gorilla Glass 3 comes in. It's tougher in every area when compared to last year's Gorilla Glass 2, which means it can withstand more impact, is harder to scratch, and is just a better product all around. Check out our video demo after the jump to get a look at its impressive performance, and expect this to hit the iPhone 5S and major Android smartphones later this year.

Microsoft announces Surface tablet

Microosft Surface Tablet

The rumor mill was calling for a new Microsoft tablet to be announced today, and thats exactly what happened. Just a few minutes ago, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer unveiled the Microsoft Surface tablet. The Microsoft Surface is a companion to Windows 8, with Microsoft saying that it's "a tablet that's a great PC, and a PC that's a great tablet." The hardware is 9.3mm thin with edges beveled at 22 degrees. The casing is all magnesium, which is a first for a computer, making the Surface weigh in at 1.5 pounds. Oh, and it's also got a 10.6-inch display, so it's here to compete with the big boys. As you'd expect, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are present, as is a built-in kickstand, Gorilla Glass, and an amazingly thin 3mm cover that also doubles as a keyboard for touch typing.

Surface will be available in the model we just detailed, as well as a Pro model that supports a higher resolution display. It's got the same chassis, same kickstand, and supports the same accessories, but this model wuns full Windows 8 Pro rather than just Windows RT. It also supports digital ink by way of a stylus. When the Surface detects the pen, it stops accepting touch input, making it easy to write on. The upgraded model also has a DisplayPort, allowing you to plug it in to a larger monitor, this giving you the regular, full PC experience.

Corning Lotus Glass to bring low power high-resolution displays

Corning lotus glassThe company behind super-strong Gorilla Glass is stepping up display technology again. Corning on Tuesday announced Lotus Glass, a new material to be used in LCD and OLED screens.

Corning said in a press release that Lotus Glass offers a high-resolution display without slurping up too much power.

“Corning Lotus Glass has a high annealing point that delivers the thermal and dimensional stability our customers require to produce high-performance displays,” Andrew Filson, global commercial director of Display Technologies and vice president of Corning, said in a statement. “Because of its intrinsic stability, it can withstand the thermal cycles of customer processing better than conventional LCD glass substrates. This enables tighter design rules in advanced backplanes for higher resolution and faster response time.”

Ars Technica explained that “LCD glass substrates can require intense heating and cooling cycles to create screens, particularly for higher-resolution displays.” However, Lotus Glass’ higher “annealing point” means the material must be placed under much higher temperatures in order to “relax internal stresses and forces,” the site said.

Droid Bionic

Motorola's long-awaited Droid Bionic smartphone is finally here.

The device, Verizon's first dual-core, LTE phone, is available now at Verizon stores and online at verizonwireless.com. It doesn't come cheap, though: the Bionic will set you back $299.99 with a two-year contract.

For a limited time, those who purchase the Lapdock accessory, which essentially turns your smartphone into a 11.6-inch laptop, will get a $100 mail-in rebate when subscribing to the $50, 5GB data plan or higher. That Lapdock, however, is also $300.
