How the Windows 8 Developer Preview works on a MacBook Air

Windows 8 Macbook Air

Microsoft released its Windows 8 Developer Preview and free developer tools to the public for download last night. It's intended to help developers start building apps for the forthcoming newest version of Microsoft's operating system. But that won't stop hordes of regular users from installing it anyway, just to get a sneak peek.

We got our hands on a copy of the software and figured that the most compelling system to install it on was a Apple MacBook Air 13-inch running Boot Camp. For the most part, the Windows 8 Developer Preview installed and ran smoothly on the Air despite being the first public build. It's stable enough that I didn't encounter heat issues, the infamous blue-screen of death (yet), or even a single application crash.

There are some key MacBook Air components that Windows 8 didn't recognize, however. These included the speakers, SD card reader, webcam, and Bluetooth, although a sophisticated user could probably tinker with current Windows drivers and get some of them to work. The good news is that the essential ones, such as Wi-Fi, the keyboard, trackpad, and USB ports, worked perfectly.

South Korea to Cure Cyberspace Addicts

South Korean Boot Camp

South Korea has decided that Cyberspace Addiction is a definite problem and has created the Jump Up Internet Rescue School to fix it. Students must go through military type obstacle courses, counseling sessions, and workshops to teach pottery and drumming to get away from those keyboards to break “bad” habits. The government has come up with an actual checklist based on the K-Scale (for Korea) and claims that about 2.4 million people under 18 are close to becoming addicts there. We are thinking that instead of trying to cure them, they might just take those same users and find out how they can help their country with their obvious technological skills.

Boot Camp 1.1 Now Supports Windows Vista

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Apple, Microsoft, PC / Laptop, Software,

Vista MacBook

Finally it looks like Windows Vista will not only play nice with Boot Camp-enabled Macs, but it will do so while supporting all of the new Aero effects as well. According to a few, the new pre-RC1 build of Windows Vista, Build 5536, works on Intel-based Macs. The installation procedure is exactly the same as if you were installing Windows XP SP2, so it should roll along without a hitch. The only downside for now is that not all the drivers are Vista-capable, which means your iSight and Apple keyboard will not work until that issue is resolved. Still, this is the closest we have to full Vista support on the Mac. If only the Parallels guys would get it together a little quicker so that we can run Vista alongside OS X.
