Dragon Quest VIII To Ship With Final Fantasy XII Demo

Square-Enix has dropped the announcement that Dragon Quest VIII will be available in stores on November 22nd and will include a Final Fantasy XII demo. With two great gaming experiences bundled into one great package, we’re sure this one is going to sell well for Square and provide great cross marketing for Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children.

Marvel And Microsoft Team Up On MMOG

Microsoft has landed a licensing agreement with Marvel to develop a Massively Multiplayer Online Game using its 5,000 plus characters. Seems that Microsoft really wants to take advantage of the fact that MMOGs are becoming ever so popular with the decreasing price of Broadband connections and community feel of this game type. This will be interesting to see how they incorporate this type of games for the Xbox 360 and just how popular they will be. Check out the full press release after the jump.

20 Greatest PS2 RPG’s: Dominated by Squaresoft

1Up has posted a great feature on the 20 best RPG’s for the Playstation 2. I was quite pleased to see a couple of my favorites listed on there. I was also pleased to see one of my favorite publishers dominating the pack - Square with Final Fantasy X, X-2, XI, Kingdom of Hearts, and Star Ocean - Till the End of Time. While the sentimental gamer in me misses the good old days of FF 3 for the SNES games like Star Ocean - Till the End of Time keep reminding me what a creative publisher can do with a powerful modern console.

The movie to one of the scariest games ever made is looking good. Seems they are really trying to replicate a lot of the scenery that fans of the game are accustomed to. This is a nice change from the movies that are loosely based on the games content that they are trying to recreate. It will be interesting indeed to see how this one turns out. Have you ever been playing your favorite Massively Multiplayer Online game, and thought to yourself how convenient it would be to just pay a few extra bucks and have a ton of extra money or items? Apparently, you’re not the only one. 1up has a story about the people running these “pharming” operations, sweatshops where people are paid pennies to play games, then they sell the proceeds. How can they possibly make any money doing this? Maybe the correct question is how much, because these people are raking in the real cash, enough to buy real houses and real cars. Newest news on the web concerning Resident Evil for the Nintendo DS has it that the game will be a remake of the original Resident Evil game. The game will feature Resident Evil 4’s camera perspective and use the touchpad for all the attacks. Even though this is a small amount of news, the greatest news of all is that it will be a remake of the original that made the series what it is now. World of Warcraft Gets Even Bigger

World of Warcraft has reached an absolutely mind-boggling number of users: over two million players for what was deemed by many to be a niche genre. But not satisfied to rest on their laurels, Blizzard has a lot of new features in store. More specifically, the next patch promises to include improvements to the much-maligned Honor System, as well as Battlemasters, NPCs that can allow a player to enter the recently added Battlegrounds from a city, instead of travelling to the location of the Battleground.
There was also a progress report of sorts from Shane Dabiri (Ordinn to WOW forum-goers), which discussed a myriad of topics, including the astronomical growth of WOW (a near 10-fold increase in realms offered over six months), and confirmation of the inevitable: an expansion for World of Warcraft is indeed in the works. “Some have asked about an expansion and what it might hold. I wanted to let players know that it is in the works, and we’ll release details as soon as we can.” If you have yet to venture into Azeroth for yourself and spend hours on end slaying the merciless Murlocs, now seems as good a time as any, assuming you have no children, family, or personal life to speak of.

Sony Buys Rights to The Matrix, DC Comics MMORPG

Last Friday, Sony Online Entertainment (SOE) — the company behind MMORPG giants Everquest and Star Wars: Galaxies — announced on Friday that they have purchased the rights to The Matrix Online. (Previously held by Warner Bros.) According to SOE, Matrix Online players will not see any changes in the game or subscription pricing, however they will need to re-register with SOE and submit their billing information while agreeing to SOE terms of service, user license, privacy policy, etc. Everyone who successfully re-registers will be able to continue playing with current characters with all of their equipment. Additionally, players will have to create a Station ID to continue playing Matrix Online. For some players this may spell trouble, as customers who have been previously banned from the Station service will not be able to continue playing The Matrix Online, even if they have been playing since the game started in March with no transgressions.
During these negotiations with Warner Bros., SOE also managed to purchase the rights to make an MMORPG based on the DC Comics universe. Details on what the new DC game will be like and on which platforms it will run are practically non-existent at the time of this writing, however the game could give superhero MMORPG City of Heroes a run for its money once the game is released, which SOE hopes will be around late 2007.
“Expanding our fans’ ability to participate in the DC universe through a great online game is a terrific step forward for DC Comics,” said Paul Levitz, President & Publisher of DC Comics. “We look forward to working with our colleagues at Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and the talented folks at SOE.”
“Our goal is to deliver quality content and consistently advance our key properties within the online games space,” said Jason Hall, senior vice president of Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. “We’ve done just that with The Matrix Online. Because of our compelling work in developing and launching that game we can now move it over to the leaders in the MMO space, SOE. We look forward to working with SOE to enhance our overall services to massively multiplayer online gamers for The Matrix Online and a new DC Comics game.”

Legend of Mir 3 Gamer Gets Jail Time

Now as most of us know, some people who play MMOG’s usually get sucked in and don’t leave their rooms for days, weeks, or months at a time. Well, this story isn’t game news but relates to a game and the stupidity of it makes me need to post this. One Chinese gamer has taken his online gaming world into the real world. Qiu, who is 43 years old, got really upset that a player he lent his “virtual sword” to in the game Legend of Mir 3 had sold it for $870. Rather than the usual name calling, cursing, or battling in game, Qiu decided to break into this persons house and murder them. Qiu was given a suspended death sentence, which pretty much means life term. Bring on the “Video games cause violence” debates!
