Ubi Soft has released a new trailer of its highly anticipated game, Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory. The streaming video is available here courtesy of TeamXbox.com. If you prefer to download the trailer, it is available here. If you are not familiar with this title, the following is the story line taken from the official Chaos Theory web site.
“Japan’s creation of an Information Self Defense Force is deemed a violation of international law and of their own Constitution and ignites rising tensions between Japan, China and North Korea. Facing North Korean and Chinese blockades of shipping across the Korea Strait, Japan requests US assistance in accordance with American obligations under Article 9 of the Japanese Post War Constitution.
Mounting evidence gathered by the I-SDF indicates that the devastation of the Japanese economy on the now infamous ‘Black Gold Day’ may have been caused by intentional Information Warfare attacks. As nations begin to mobilize and the United States activates the USS Clarence E Walsh, the world’s premiere Electronic and Information Warfare platform and dispatches her to the region, Third Echelon gets wind of a small and seemingly unrelated incident that may end up having global repercussions…”
The trailer really does a great job at building hype by focusing on the multi player aspects of Ubi Soft’s latest espionage video game. Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory will be released March 30, 2005. The months of waiting are about to come to an end. Sony announced at the Consumer Electronics Show that the PSP is on schedule to be released in the United States in March. The pricepoint will be under $200, which is sure to calm the nerves of some people worried about the system costing too much. Sony hopes to take down Nintendo’s own portable, the DS, which was released in December.

Nyko Loves Your PSP, PS2, Xbox, and DS

Nyko seems to have decided to make excellent accessories for the world’s most desired items. More CES announcements from the company include a bundle package for the Nintendo DS with screen protectors, a lit stylus, a soft case and charger grips with rechargable batteries. The PSP gets a water and shock proof alluminum recharger case in one package and a case and stand with hifi speakers in another package. Xbox users will have a choice of headsets or a pair of wireless controllers with vibration packs (also PS2 compatible). Even PC gamers are included with a convenient port extender which brings ports and jacks to the front of the machine for easier swap outs.

Now, you can take this for what you will, but former co-host of The Screen Savers Alex Albrecht states he spoke with a Microsoft employee who gave him some information on the Xbox 2 console which is set to debut at E3. According to the employee, the new console will sport a flash-based drive giving it an advantage on load times over the hard drive in the current model. The source also said that the Xbox 2 would in fact be showcased at E3, where a price and launch date will be announced. Like I said, take it for what you will.

CES 2005 Opens This Week

Pretty soon, we’re going to be flooded with lots of news on all the new gear products coming out later this year and beyond. It’s because the annual Consumer Electronics Show opens up this week in Las Vegas. The show runs January 6-9, and features a messload of exhibits showcasing the latest in everything from BlueTooth technology to home theatre to WiFi. Some of the major products that debuted in past CES shows include plasma TV’s, HDTV, CD’s and DVD’s. It’s just huge, with some 129,000 attendees. Special events to look out for this year include a pre-show keynote speech by Bill Gates, and a show-floor gaming competition. Speaking of games, PSXExtreme reports that details on the Sony PSP’s US launch, pricing, and titles will all be revealed at the show.

According to Cnet, video game sales have been 11 percent higher compared to last year’s $7 billion in revenue. Shouldn’t be too big a surprise, considering this is widely considered to be the best year ever in terms of games. What might be more interesting is the make-up of the actual game players, with an average age of 29 when you factor in PC gamers. Maybe the trend will reverse once these older gamers teach their own kids how to play at an earlier age. The article goes on to express doubts about software sales for next year, as developers focus on becoming familiar with new hardware releases, such as Xbox2 in 2005 and PS3, which is looking at a 2006 release.

Sony’s small wonder is coming soon to the States. Already a huge success at it’s Japanese launch earlier this month, the system is so hot that many gamers have resorted to importing it at extravagant prices. Here at Gear Live we’re a little more patient, (okay, maybe just a little more broke) but that hasn’t kept us from finding out all we could about the handheld. 2005 is fastly approaching, and one of the biggest peices of hardware video game fans are looking forward in the new year is the Xbox 2. When coupled with the fact that Halo 2.5 is set to launch with the new system, there is an even greater reason to get hyped. According to Team Xbox, the Halo 2 “director’s cut” will feature all the things Bungie promised with Halo 2, but failed to deliver due to both hardware limitations and time constraints. So what changes can you expect? It appears that one definate is that the game run in all it’s high definition glory. Just when you thought you had heard it all, someone goes and does something like this. Someone known only by his uber cool gaming name, Deathifier, decided to buy an island within the online RPG Project Entropia. Now, when I say buy, I mean with real cash. The island had an abandoned castle and “beautiful beaches which were ripe for developing beachfront property.” Now get this - Deathifier sees it as an investment. He is now able to tax other gamers who wish to visit his island to go hunting, or mining for gold. Smart guy. It has been said that massively multiplayer online roleplaying games (MMORPGs) have a gross economic impact equivalent to the GDP of the African nation of Namibia. As for me, I would be pissed if I couldn’t move into that abandoned castle after spending $26,500 on a game.
