Playstation Car

How cool would it be to become a real race car driver just by playing a video game? Ask Lucas Ordoñez, who won the Nissan/Playstation GT Academy contest. The game was Gran Turismo and the prize was becoming part of the European GT racing team. In his first race, Lucas crashed on the final lap, but still managed to come in third. The team will hit Italy next and has 4 more races this year. By the way, real training was included in the prize.

Marilyn StoreyNext time you get in your car, remember to leave your laptop in the trunk or under a seat belt. Canadian Heather Storey was involved in a fatal collision with a tow truck while in her Volkswagen. Forensic experts believe that she might have survived the crash if her laptop, which was in the back seat and flew at her, hadn’t hit her in the back of the head. Heather had previously used the device to let her mom, (pictured here with the offending item,) know that she was leaving on a business trip.

Auto USB ChargerDual Charger

It can really be a pain to recharge devices when the outlet is in the middle of your dashboard. Belkin’s Micro Auto USB Charger actually fits flush in your car’s lighter socket and is a single 1000mAh charger for iPhones and iPods. Out next month, it will set you back $15.00. A somewhat larger and bulkier Dual Auto Charger can handle 1A and 500mA and will take care of your portable GPS system or other electronics at a $30.00 price.

Panasonic Blu-raySince you are already buying Blu-ray discs for your home, maybe it is time to upgrade to Panasonic’s car entertainment system. Install the CN-HX900D dash-mountable device with its CD/DVD player, 40GB Windows hard drive, GPS, and Bluetooth and iPod/iPhone compatibility. Add to that a 7-inch 1280x720 display. Then you need a CYBB1000D for the kidlets in the back. Look for it to come out in the fall. No price has been released as yet, but we figure this one is going to cost a bit.

Lisbon GPSClever Spain has installed GPS navigation systems in buses that go from the airport to the Lisbon’s center. One is placed in the front and one is in the middle of the vehicle. Partially designed for the driver, riders can see a list of stops on the way there. We guess the only problem is that the signal can be lost in case of a narrow street or going through a tunnel. We hope other cities adopt this idea for travelers who are navigationally challenged.

Lucky Washington gets to be the first U.S. city to receive free mobile digital TV for laptops, cell phones, handhelds and in-car entertainment systems. The first broadcasts will be like those beamed to TVs, including advertising. The target date is set for late summer and will consist of CBS, NBC, PBS, Ion and Fox. Mobile DTV will be available to about 2 dozen other cities by the end of the year, to include New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Boston and Atlanta.

SegwaySegways have been prohibited from Japanese streets (and sidewalks) by Japanese road laws, but now, because of Yokahama’s push for tourists and use of environmentally friendly vehicles, the city and Segway Japan are apparently in negotiations to make them street legal. The average price of one in Japan is $10,000.00 and about 100 of the vehicles have been sold so far for use on private property. We guess that means they may also embrace GM’s new PUMA.

Saturn AuraThe government will be spending about $285 million by June 1 in Detroit by trading in their older gas guzzlers to purchase about 17,600 new vehicles from GM, Ford and Chrysler. Part of the stimulus bill, it couldn’t have come at a better time for the beleaguered industry. About 2,500 hybrid sedans like the Chevy Malibu, Saturn Aura and Ford Hybrid Fusion have been ordered. Now if we could just get our local governments to follow suit.

PUMA

Struggling GM has gotten together with Segway to create the PUMA (Personal Urban Mobility and Accessibility.) The two-wheeled USV (ultra small vehicle) will have a maximum speed of 35 mph and can go as far as 35 miles. When the vehicle stops, training wheels can be utilized. Fortunately, it is a bit more protected than the original 2-wheeler. Even if that is the case, we don’t think that it will be a big seller in the colder parts of the U.S., especially in SUV driven Detroit. Look for them to appear by 2012..
