CES 2008: Slingbox PRO-HD
Posted by Jenny Lewis Categories: CES, CES 2008, HDTV, Home Entertainment, Videos, Wireless / WiFi,
Sling Media, Inc. has announced the newest iteration of Slingbox. The Slingbox PRO-HD is capable of placeshifting over the air, cable, satellite and even DVR HD signals to a computer in the house.
When the PRO-HD is used with a Slingcatcher, the PRO-HD will stream HD content in either 4:3 and 16:9 to another TV in the house, and when the PRO-HD and Slingcatcher are combined with an upload connection speed of 1.5 - 2Mbps, the PRO-HD will stream HD content to another television or computer anywhere, without down-converting the resolution to EDTV.
Slingbox PRO-HD will be available in the 3rd quarter of 2008 with an estimated MSRP of $400.00. We will have some video up of this, along with the Slingcatcher, up on our CES 2008 video page.

CES 2008: Pioneer Kuro HDTV Concept: 50-inch, 9mm Thin Plasma
Posted by Chris Cardinal Categories: CES, CES 2008, HDTV,
Billed as being “thinner than last month’s Wired magazine” and similarly thinner than an iPhone, Pioneer unveiled their Kuro HDTV concept model at their press conference today. The 50-inch plasma weighs in at a relatively paltry 41 lbs and just 9 mm thick. They also claim they’ve “made contrast ratios irrelevant” by eliminating ALL idling luminance, producing completely true blacks. We’ll see how it looks later this week, as they’ll have their concept on the show floor but the early photos they have are impressive to say the least.
Since these are merely concepts, they won’t be available for another year or so but it clearly shows the direction Pioneer is going with their form factors and by “obsoleting” contrast ratios.
Look forward to some video coverage on the floor unit once the show opens up.

Samsung to Unveil Larger AMOLED Display
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: CES, Corporate News, Design, HDTV, Home Entertainment,
Samsung has developed a 31-inch AMOLED (active-matrix organic light emitting diode) screen, their largest thus far. When electricity is applied to organic materials, it creates clearer and brighter images than in LCDs and PDPs. Although the company has been playing around with the technology for a while now and released a smaller version in October 2006, they will probably be showing of their new offspring at this month’s CES. We expect Samsung not to be the last company to explore the possibilities.

It is now only 412 days until the end of analog TV. If you want to receive a coupon good for $40.00 towards the price of an ATCS tuner, you had best get to it. We checked into it yesterday (day one) and noticed that our order was around number 22,000. Since the boxes will not become available until late February or early March, the coupons will be issued then. Up to two per household are allowed and they expire 90 days from receipt. Remember that if you have cable or satellite, chances are the problem will be taken care of for you, but it never hurts to have a back-up plan.

Panasonic Unveils Humongous 150-inch Plasma Screen
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: CES, Corporate News, HDTV, Home Entertainment,
Panasonic is planning to unveil a 150-inch Plasma screen TV. At 2 x 3.5 meters, it is 47-inches bigger than its former large screen panel. Developed by Matsushita, it is big enough to display a full-size human. Available by 2009, it is set to debut as the world’s largest TV at next month’s CES. Sharp currently holds the record with a 108-inch LCD TV but we are guessing that Panasonic just had to have the last word
picture.

2007 Holiday Gift Guide: Onkyo TX-NR905
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Features, HDTV, Home Entertainment, Men, Techies,
Okay, the holidays are right around the corner. In our continuing effort to hook you up with the best gear, we had to point out the Onkyo TX-NR905. This is a product that has blown us away in our testing.
Let’s be clear - the Onkyo TX-NR905 A/V receiver isn’t the lightest device in the world, as it weighs in at 54 pounds - but that’s just about where the negatives end when it comes to this beast. This thing is like a classic Mustang - all muscle. You can throw anything at it - you know, HD DVD players, game consoles, TiVos, Blu-ray - and expect phenomenal 7.1 surround sound. And we mean pristine. Even better, the TX-NR905 bridges the gap between your entertainment center and the Internet by way of it’s Ethernet port. Hook up to the Internet, and you can stream Internet radio directly through this system. Moving on the picture quality - again, top notch all the way here. It will pump out 1080p signals, it supports 24p framerate, and has 2 HDMI outputs along with component out for your HDTV needs. Oh course, this thing is all about the sound. You get 140 watts per channel, and this is the most inexpensive receiver to feature THX Ultra2 certification. Believe me, if you haven’t heard it, you will be the envy of your block. Don’t worry though, you won’t be able to hear the complaints if you crank this thing up. Rounding out the feature set here, it will upconvert all inputs to 1080p, supports multiple zones, and also has HD radio built-in. Retails for $1,999. Compare prices on Onkyo TX-NR905.
