Toshiba to integrate Media Center Extender technology into HDTVs
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: CES, CES 2009, HDTV, Home Entertainment, Internet, Microsoft,
Hey, it’s CES time, and that means we are getting slammed with news from all ends. Toshiba, happy to get in on that party, has just announced that they’ll be integrating Media Center Extender technology directly into their REGZA line of HDTVs, and that they are even working on a standalone device that you can integrate into your home theater setup as well to get the same functionality. I guess this is the most we can expect from the company whose HD DVD technology lost out to Blu-ray in a major way. We’ve got the full release for you after the break.

Panasonic Plasma 3DTV With Blu-ray Player
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: HDTV, Home Entertainment, Movies,
You will still need some glasses, but Panasonic will be offering a 103-inch Plasma 3DTV and Blu-ray disc player that will deliver 1930x1080p high def. The company says that they put 2 sets of HD images onto one disc and have a way to record, decode and playback the images. The glasses themselves are synchronized shutters instead of those cheapy ones you used to watch Captain Eeo way back at Disneyland. Okay, but we bet they will still be nerdy and prices will be expensive plus.

SlingPlayer for Mac HD to appear at MacWorld 2009
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Apple, HDTV, Home Entertainment, Internet, PC / Laptop,
In addition to SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone making an appearance at MacWorld 2009, Sling Media has also made it known that we can expect a first look at high definition SlingPlayer content on OS X. Oddly, though, the HD streaming won’t be through the actual SlingPlayer application installed on your Mac - instead, it will be through the browser version at Sling.com. While we’d prefer to see it in the native app (and one would think that functionality has to be coming,) we will take whatever we can get as it pertains to SlingBox streaming in OS X. Oh, and since its housed on Sling.com, the HD streaming will be free.

More Demand Than Supply for Digital TV Converter Coupons
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: HDTV, Home Entertainment, Misc. Tech,
The conversion to digital TV is less than 2 months away, so if you stashed your coupons in a drawer somewhere, they have probably expired. Apparently there is a last minute rush as the Department of Commerce says there are simply not enough available. They are hoping that Congress will allow additional funding.
“Once the obligation ceiling is reached, the program will hold coupon requests until funds from unredeemed coupons become available,” said Meredith Attwell Baker, acting asst. secretary for Communications and Information at the National Telecommunications and Information Administration. There are about 60 models out there to choose from, but without the coupon, you will pay between $40.00 and $90.00.

The Korean company LG will be displaying an even thinner LED-backlit LCD TV at the upcoming CES 2009. It has a thickness of 24.8mm, which is slightly smaller than an inch. The TV has a 2,000,000:1 ratio and the company’s 240Hz TrueMotion Drive technology. It has already won an Innovation Award in the display category. There is no availability date or price revealed but that’s okay, in our cramped quarters, we still want one!

Holiday Gift Guide 2008: VUDU $99 for a limited time ($200 off!)
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Features, HDTV, Home Entertainment, Movies, Men, Techies, Under $100,
If you, or someone you love, is a big movie buff with an HDTV, we have to recommend the VUDU Christmas Special that is going on right now. The VUDU set-top box normally sells for $299, but for a limited time it can be had for just $99. Now, you also have to buy $50 in movie credits, so the total cost would be $149, but that $50 is would go towards rentals and purchases of VUDU content, including their fantastic HDX 1080p movies. Rentals cost from $1-4 dollars, and purchases are obviously higher.
We recently reported on a lot of the Internet content that has also just made its way to the VUDU service, so all in all, we think this would make a nice gift - either for someone else, or for yourself. Our only complaint with VUDU remains that their speeds are limited, which provides a very, very poor experience if you want to rent HDX content. No matter how fast your Internet connection is, VUDU caps downloads at 4.0 Mbps. That means that my super fast 50.0 Mbps FiOS connection means absolutely nothing, and I still have to wait hours before I can watch an HDX flick. If they got rid of that, it would unleash HDX, their flagship offering. A personal niggle for sure, though. If you don’t care, pick one up!
If you miss the sale, you can typically find some nice VUDU deals on Amazon.
