Earth Day Deal: Planet Earth and Life on Blu-ray for $50
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: HDTV, Hot Deals, Movies, Science,
Earth Day 2010 is here, and the Discovery Channel Store has an amazing deal that we had to let you in on to celebrate the occasion—you can get both the Planet Earth series and the Life series as a Blu-ray set for $50. Shipping is $4, so for $54 total, you get both documentary series on Blu-ray, which would normally cost $169.90 in total. It’s basically a steal, the visuals are jaw-dropping, and it’s a bit more Earth Day-ish than Avatar.

Amazon selling Sylvania Blu-ray player for $59.99!
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: HDTV, Home Entertainment, Hot Deals,
Amazon is currently selling a Slyvania Blu-ray player for $59.99, which has got to be the absolute cheapest price we have ever seen for a standalone Blu-ray player to date. It’s compatible with all the expected surround sound formats, and can play back just about any kind of disc you can think of. It supports Bonus View Profile 1.1, so while it isn’t a 2.0 player, we think it is safe to say that not many people use those 2.0 features. For $60, this is a steal.

SXSW 2010: From Hulu to Yahoo Widgets: Will the Internet Transform the TV?
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Editorial, Features, HDTV, Home Entertainment, Internet,
Rovi Chief Evangelist, Richard Bullwinkle had an afternoon session at SXSW 2010, dealing with convergence in the living room, “From Hulu To Yahoo Widgets: Will The Internet Transform The TV?”
He started the session with the statement “It is difficult to upgrade your television because it is affixed to a wall.” With computers, you can go to a new website, such as moving your social network from myspace.com to facebook.com. With a mobile phone you can delete the location centric Loopt app and load Foursquare or Whrrl. But your
television cannot be updated and it is typically maintained by someone who put it on the wall.
With the American market being spread out over thousands of miles, broadband penetration and the speed of those connections becomes the next issue. Music and streaming television is not a problem with existing bandwidth; be it via cable, to the house or Wi-Fi within. As we get to HD quality, few have the capacity to our homes to achieve this rate. I know of this pain point personally and have solved it by running three networks at the house, one for devices like the iPhone and Chumby at 2.4 GHz and the others for high definition video distribution over Gigabit Ethernet and 802.11N at 5GHz.

First HD Video Converting Software for Multi-track HD Released, Free for Limited Time
Posted by Finnian Durkan Categories: HDTV, Software,
Digiarty Software has announced the release of WinX HD Video Converter Deluxe, the first converter to support multi-track HD videos. WinX HD Video Converter Deluxe builds in 160 video and 50 audio codecs. This means that, no matter the codec (a piece of software that allows for digital compression/decompression) that you prefer based on your own personal needs/choices regarding video quality vs. file size. Without any third-party codecs, WinX can also easily support Multi-track HD video, such as BDAV, M2TS, MKV, AVCHD, HDTV and MPEG-TS video movies. It also supports converting all the HD and HD-Camcorder videos, to both portable and console players, such as iPad, iPod, iPhone, Apple TV, PS3, PSP, Xbox, Zune, PDA, Blackberry, Nokia, Android, Zen, and many others. On top of all of this, WinX is also able to convert your HD videos at 5x-15x speed, making converting your videos not only easy but much, much faster.
So while you yourself may not be HD ready, what with your unsightly blemishes, pores big enough to serve guacamole out of, and makeup that looks like it was applied using a snow-blower, your videos are; that’s on you for buying a product that so greatly highlights all of your many shortcomings. I’ll be over here with my beta-max shoulder-camcorder and boom-mike, making videos that blur to the point of resembling impressionistic art, thank you very much. But, if you’ve already taken the leap to HD, the WinX HD Video Converter Deluxe is available for a free download at the link below.

TiVo Premiere image and details leaked
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Corporate News, HDTV, Home Entertainment, Rumors,
Alright, we just hit you with the image of the new TiVo Premiere interface, and now the AP has come through again, letting an image of the actual TiVo Premiere box hit their site a bit early, alongside an image of the TiVo Wireless-N adapter. With the image, they also give the following details:
A TiVo Premiere box, foreground, is displayed with an HD television, Monday, March 1, 2010, in New York. TiVo Premiere combines access to cable programming, movies, web videos, and music all in one box.
TiVo already does all that with the Series3 and TiVo HD, but we are guessing that they are gonna be a bit more app-centric now, kind of like what we see with Boxee.

New TiVo Premiere interface leaked?
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: HDTV, Home Entertainment, Rumors,
TiVo is currently conducting a press event, and we should be hearing some news coming out of it in under an hour. However, you can leave it up to the Associated Press to leak whatever is going down, since they think they are pretty much untouchable. Case in point, the leaked image above of the new TiVo interface. Basically, it looks like a revamped and retuned Swivel Search. Now, we aren’t sure if this will be exclusive to the TiVo Premiere, or if it will be deployed to the TiVo HD and/or Series3. Either way, there you have it. We should have more details within the hour!

TiVo planning major announcement on March 2 in NYC
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: HDTV, Home Entertainment, Rumors,
Okay, TiVo, you are setting up your March 2 NYC announcement to be a pretty big deal when you use the words “Inventing the DVR was just a warmup” to get people to pay attention. That said, you’ve got our attention. We definitely know TiVo has something going on, what with the whole TiVo Premiere accidental leak a couple of months ago, and how their CES presence was pretty much relegated to invite-only status. So, what do we think will happen?
We are expecting the new TiVo Premiere box will launch, alongside a newly revamped menu system that will also be pushed out to TiVo Series3 and TiVo HD boxes (kind of like the new Xbox Experience dashboard refresh) that will be in full HD. We also expect that the interface might be made to be a bit more modular, to support apps, widgets, and all of that Internet-y goodness that people are into these days. We’ll know for sure on the 2nd of March, 6PM EST.

Onkyo’s 2010 receivers to support HDMI 1.4
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: HDTV, Home Entertainment,
HDMI 1.4 is the next big thing, namely because it brings with it support for 3D television as well as the Audio Return Channel, and Onkyo seems to be leading the charge with getting it rolled into their products and into the hands of the public. In fact, Onkyo just announced that their 2010 receivers, scheduled to start shipping this spring, will support HDMI 1.4. That’s just in time for some of that 3D TV and Blu-ray content to appear.
“We are very supportive of the new standard,” said Onkyo’s marketing manager Paul Wasek, “because of the added capabilities and the simplification of system connections.”
We are fans of Onkyo, and we are definitely looking forward to getting our hands on the new receiver line.

TiVo HD out of stock. TiVo Premiere imminent?
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: HDTV, Home Entertainment, Rumors,
Looks like TiVo has run out of TiVo HD units, if their online store is any indication, which has us wondering if the newer TiVo Premiere is about to make it’s debut. We originally mentioned the TiVo Premiere when a customer accidentally received a manual for the device packed in with a TiVo HD purchase. You’d think that if TiVo was already printing instructions on how to use the device, it had to be near-ready to ship, and this was just over a month ago.
In the meantime, if you want a TiVo, go for the TiVo XL instead.
