Phish

The new year will not only be about change…it’ll apparently be about reuniting.

So far we’ve already learned about reunion tours for Fleetwood Mac and the Grateful Dead. Now we can add Phish to that growing list.

Although the group split (or took an extended hiatus) back in 2004, the band’s four members will be collaborating once again for eight engagements later this summer. After a three-day stint in March, Phish will resume their tour starting June 4 in New York. (Tickets go on sale January 30th.)

Kanye West

“I made a decision. I wanna make popular music, but I want less fans. I want the freedom of having less fans. It’s like the freedom of having less money. If you have less money, you have less responsibility. It’s like Björk. If she wanted to pose naked, you’d be like, ‘Oh, that’s Björk.’ But if I wanted to pose naked, people would draw all type of things into it. I definitely feel like, in the next however many years, if I work out for two months, that I’ll pose naked. I break every rule and mentality of hip-hop, of black culture, of American culture.”

Okkervil River

played Brooklyn’s newest bar The Bell House on Tuesday.  Playing to a sold out crowd, they played most songs from their last two outstanding albums The Stage Names and The Stage Ins

Will Sheff and band were in fine form this night.  Songs such as “Black Sheep Boy and “For Real” are blistering live.  I love the pairing of these two songs which is how it also appears on their album Black Sheep Boy.  “Black Sheep Boy” starts off with just Will and guitar, but then it goes into “For Real” which is dark, loud, and wonderful.

The scariest moment might have been a drunken fan that barreled through the front of the stage and started dancing wildly.  Thankfully, he was taken away by security after one song.  It was a bit of a frightening moment in otherwise a fantastic show.

Kelly Clarkson’s “My Life Would Suck Without You,” the first single on her upcoming album, can now be previewed through Amazon.com. Upon hearing the track, it’s possible to forget all the troubles that so recently plagued Kelly. It’s possible to believe she’ll be back on top of the music world soon.

’s first winner quickly became a pop princess and viable hit maker. Her first album, Thankful, debuted at number one on the Billboard chart. Her next project, the Grammy-winning album Breakaway, showed that Clarkson could offer some edge with her music, as well. In 2006, it looked like Kelly Clarkson’s success was unstoppable.

But while working on her third album My December, Clarkson suffered a public split with her management company and had reported troubles with her label. She canceled a summer tour and suffered a few negative headlines, but Clarkson started to pull through. The album became a success, and now Kelly’s all set to release more scintillating singles for her listeners.

Go ahead and treat your ears to the not-so-sucky preview, but you’ll have to wait until March before the rest of Clarkson’s album becomes available.

PrinceIf singing “1999” seems a bit too nostalgic for 2009, you will soon have a larger Prince catalogue to choose from.

In a recent interview with the Los Angeles Times, the 50-year-old singer announced that was preparing to release three new albums over the current year. MPLSOUND, which has been described as “electro-flavored,” features Q-Tip on one of the tracks. “Guitar-driven” Lotus Flower includes “Dreamer,” a cover of “Crimson & Clover.” Then there’s Elixir, a collaboration with his latest protege, Bria Valente.

Since he has no plans to work through a record label, Prince said is currently in talks with a major retailer to distribute the discs. Fans would also be able to purchase the music in digital form through the artist’s web site.

Grateful Dead

Although is still weeks away from officially taking office, the President-elect can take partial credit for accomplishing one task: getting the Grateful Dead back on the road again.

Speculation about a possible tour began brewing last year after the bandmates reunited for February’s “Deadheads For Obama ‘08” concert in San Francisco. That performance was followed up several months later by another fundraising appearance at October’s “Change Rocks” concert/rally in Pennsylvania.

In a statement, guitarist/singer Bob Weir said the crew had some “unfinished business” to take care of. Bob added, “Everybody has a whole new bag of tricks; we have the body of material we worked up over the years and we have a mind meld going on here and it would be a sin to let that just wither and die.”

Sanjaya MalakarBelieve it or not, it’s now officially been two years since divided audiences with his performances on American Idol. Unfortunately for Sanjaya, his vocal stylings will probably be forgotten long before his faux-hawk…or will they?

Later this month, Malakar will take advantage of America’s renewed interest in the reality show (Idol returns to the airwaves on January 13) and release a handful of new tracks. The EP, titled Dancing to the Music in My Head, will offer 5 new songs ranging in titles from A Quintessential Lullaby to A Guy Like Me.

Is Sanjaya still worth a whole $4.95, or is he so 2007? You can preview the tracks here and decide for yourself.

Clearly the economic woes have not been felt by all.

In 2009, Madonna earned over $280 million in ticket sales worldwide. (That’s enough to pay several divorce settlements.) The success of the Sticky & Sweet tour made the singer the best solo draw of all time. (She beat the previous record set by herself in 2006.) The 50-year-old also became the top concert attraction in North America this year.

Here are the Top Ten North American tours of 2008:

  1. Madonna ($105 million)
  2. Celine Dion ($94 million)
