To celebrate Black History Month, Time magazine has named what it believes to be ‘The 25 Most Important Films on Race.’
In making these selections, the magazine hopes to “honor the artistry, appeal and determination of African Americans on and behind the screen.”
Some choices were predictable (Gone with the Wind, In the Heat of the Night), some were surprising (Bamboozled, I Am Legend), while others were left off altogether (Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner?, Glory).

Michael Cera to Star in Film Adaptation of Youth in Revolt

Youth In Revolt, both a critically acclaimed novel by C.D. Payne and a failed MTV mini-series, has been adapted into a screenplay and began production early this year. This original and hilarious black comedy will star Michael Cera (Juno, Superbad) as the story’s overly sex-crazed protagonist, Nick Twisp, who - along with an inconvenient hair trigger on his erectile response - involves himself in arson, car theft, homelessness and even an identity change to satisfy his pubescent desires and finally lose his virginity. Although no other cast members have been confirmed, Cera’s recently built reputation for the role as the awkward teen with no grip on a decent romantic or sex life (which rightfully won him 2 nominations for Best Young Actor this year) will certainly do great justice for the role.

Box Office Breakdown: Hudson and McConaughey Strike Gold

Fool’s Gold, the latest joint venture for Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey, debuted at the top of the charts this weekend with $21 million. (When that total is worthy of a first place finish, you know times were slow.) This marks the second time the pair opened in the $20 million dollar range; 2003’s How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days started at $23.8 million.
Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins was the only other new entry in this weekend’s Top Ten. The Martin Lawrence comedy grossed $16 million over the three days pushing Hannah Montana into third place. The 3-D concert, though, had the stronger per screen average ($14,987).

Is Paris Hilton Getting Cold?

When Paris Hilton went to jail, it become the only media story in the entire world. For a while there, the heiress couldn’t make a single move without finding flashbulbs in her face. But Miss Hilton loves the attention, and she often makes herself available for photo-ops. Maybe…too much?
Hilton’s latest film project, The Hottie & The Nottie, actually opened this weekend. I know with all the news of the writers strike and the rumors of a second Hannah Montana movie it’s hard to keep up with Hilton’s every move, but the flick came to theaters Feb. 8. Don’t worry - a lot of other people didn’t notice, either. The film, to date, has grossed a disappointing $27,696, which probably doesn’t even put a dent in Hilton’s movie salary.

American Teen: Teen Drama for Today

In the ‘80s, teens watched movies like Pretty in Pink and The Breakfast Club, which showed the angst and agony of growing up with plenty of bubble gum cheer mixed in. Those same ‘80s teens grew up and found out (like Jay and Silent Bob, two View Askew characters) that there is no Shermer, Illinois. Even in the ‘80s, teens just aren’t that tame. Or…are they?
There’s only one way to find out. The documentary American Teen features four Warsaw, Indiana High School students. Which High School do they attend? The only one available in Warsaw, Indiana - and yes, I’m totally serious. The movie follows four stereotyped teens - a homecoming queen, an artistic female student, a jock and a “geeky” loner. Throw in one of those catchy, mellow ‘80s rock tunes and you’ve got a good start on re-making St. Elmo’s Fire. But for this flick, there’s no script. There might not even be a happy ending where the somewhat awkward girl gets the hotter-than-hot guy.

Roy Scheider - the man partially responsible for making people fear the ocean - passed away Sunday afternoon.
The star, best known for his role in 1975’s Jaws, had been suffering for years from multiple myeloma. His wife says Scheider’s death was a result of complications stemming from a staph infection.
Although the actor will always be linked to the classic Spielberg film (and its unfortunate sequel), he also earned Oscar-nominations for parts in two other films: 1971’s The French Connection and 1979’s All That Jazz.
Scheider was 75 years old.

‘Indiana Jones’ Trailer Coming to Theaters

If you’ve lacking plans for your Valentine’s Day, consider taking your honey out to a showing of The Spiderwick Chronicles. Not only will you catch Freddie Highmore in yet another high-profile child role, you’ll get an added bonus: a glimpse of the next Indiana Jones film.
The trailer for Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull will be the first teaser we’ve seen for the series in approximately 19 years. The Feb. 14th debut will kick off the three-month countdown to the film’s debut on May 22nd.
Karen Allen, Cate Blanchett and Shia LeBeouf will all join Harrison Ford for the latest outing.

Brad Renfro Autopsy Results

Two days after learning Heath Ledger’s cause of death, we’re finally getting the report on another actor’s passing. Brad Renfro, who was found on Jan. 15th, died from a drug overdose.
According to the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office, The Client star - whose death is being considered an accident - had apparently been injecting heroin into his system. Unfortunately, this was not the 25-year-old’s first encounter with the drug. Renfro’s career had been overshadowed by several substance-related brushes with the law.
Brad’s last film, The Informers, is currently in post-production.

Love Scene for Scarlett Johannson and Penelope Cruz

Now that I’ve caught your attention…
According to the New York Post, an upcoming moment in Vicky Cristina Barcelona may rival that scene from Wild Things most people know quite well about.
In this film, two A-List actresses will engage in what is being described as an “extremely erotic” lesbian performance. To ramp up the tension, the ladies - Scarlett Johannson and Penelope Cruz - will later be joined by a third.
Cruz’s on-screen husband (and real-life boyfriend), Javier Bardem, is the lucky guy who will eventually turn the twosome into a ménage à trois.
Did I mention that this is a Woody Allen film?

Unboxing: The Official ‘Juno’ Hamburger Phone

It isn’t too often we here at FilmCrunch get to do an official unboxing like our sister site, Unboxing.com. But I kind of think this actually one-ups their normal gadgetry, allowing you to get your vicarious thrills
doubly—it’s cool and it’s related to one of this year’s best films, Juno. Case in point, I give you the Official Juno Hamburger Phone. Yes, that so-ugly-and-weird-that-it’s-cute-and-I-actually-really-want-one phone was handed to me as part of the film’s promotion, and I couldn’t be more excited about it.
I haven’t had the chance to use it yet—I don’t have a landline—but I hear it works about as well as the one from the movie. Remind me not to use it the next time I call my local abortion clinic.
