DS Lite While Nintendo’s first day sales figures for the DS Lite in Europe didn’t particularly amaze the gaming public, the handheld is selling in respectable numbers. Nintendo of Europe recently announced that in the ten days since launch, they have sold over 200,000 DS Lites in the UK. This has brought their total sales of DS and DS Lites in Europe to over five million consoles, and has pushed many of their software titles to similar success. For whatever reason, Nintendo has not done as well with the DS in Europe as in the US and Japanese territories, but it looks like they are making progress.

DS Lite GamesIndustry.biz reveals a report from market analyst Enterbrain, which linked the success of the Nintendo DS to a 30 percent software growth in the first quarter. The DS has been frighteningly popular in Japan, and continually dominates the hardware and software sales charts. It is unclear whether this is going to be a sustained growth pattern, or more of a reflection of the boom and bust cycles that follow a console release history. It is also uncertain whether this change is benefiting anybody besides Nintendo and a few of their partners; the majority of successful DS titles have been first party. It is possible that this is due to Nintendo’s early dedication to the format; other developers that follow in their footsteps may see their own successes, but that hasn’t happened yet.

DS in Half Shell

Now that you’ve been convinced to buy a DS twice (you HAD to have the original DS when it came out, and now you’ve GOT to get the DS Lite), what are you going to do with that DS Phat? Give it to your girlfriend? Sell it for a third of what you paid on eBay? Or how about putting your creative juices to work and coming up with the coolest DS mod ever!

4ColorRebellion is reporting on a DS owner who painted up their original DS to look like a Koopa Troopa shell, and the results are absolutely stunning and gorgeous. Just keep in mind 4Color’s words of wisdom:

Please do not confuse this mod with an actual Koopa Troopa shell. Jumping on it repeatedly while on a stairway will not help you rack up infinite lives. It will just piss off your parents.

Good advice, guys!

Deep LabyrinthDS owners are eagerly anticipating Final Fantasy III, but there are other RPGs that DS owners might want to investigate. Siliconera talks to Atlus about one release, Deep Labyrinth. The game is of interest for a few reasons; First, Masato Kato was involved with its creation. Kato might be better known for his involvement with games like Chrono Trigger, Xenogears, and Final Fantasy XI. Second, the game was originally a popular cell phone game in Japan. Third, the graphics and game play are being updated for the DS, with a totally new storyline added to the original. The RPG will also make extensive use of the touch screen, for both melee attacks and magic spells. Gamers looking for a good dungeon exploration game might want to look at Deep Labyrinth this August.

Mega Man ZX

Rockman ZX for the Nintendo DS ships on July 6 in Japan, and will ship in the US in September as Mega Man ZX. Game Watch Japan revealed that if the Game Boy Advance slot contains either Mega Man Zero 3 or Mega Man Zero 4, special features are unlocked. Apparently, playing ZX with one of these two cartridges allows gamers to fight the bosses from the Zero series, adding another dimension to the game for die hard Mega Man fans. While this functionality hasn’t actually been confirmed for the US version of the game, this feature would seem to be a lock.

Valkyrie Profile SilmeriaNew Super Mario Bros. has finally been pushed from the top of the best seller’s list in Japan. Gamers who bet that a Square-Enix published title would accomplish this feat scored a win, as Valkyrie Profile: Silmeria took the top spot. The tri-Ace developed game sold 281,510 copies between the 19th and 25th of June. Mario is still no slouch, clocking in at 170,168 units. The Magic Box’s translation of the latest Media Create numbers show five other DS titles in the top ten, including Animal Crossing, Digimon Story, and three DS training titles. SNK Playmore’s latest entry in the King of Fighters series debuted at sixth on the list, with 28,015 copies sold.

Despite Mario’s loss in the rankings, the DS Lite was still the number one seller, with gamers picking up another 157,022 consoles, and no other console even came close. The Playstation 2 still has legs in Japan, with 25,467 units sold. Apparently, there are still some diehard Xbox fans living the dream; 10 people picked up that console last week.
