Halo Movie

We reported the other day that the Halo script was finalized and being handed off to movie studios for consideration. Well, it seems that Microsoft and Bungie had some pretty crazy demands which are making studios give them nothing but an activated plasma grenade.  Five studios have dropped off the line-up of possibilities so far and only 2 big guys remain, Fox and Universal. They are still in the game pending talks with Bungie and Microsoft about their far fetched money expectations.

Even studio executives, known for their lavish spending, winced at Microsoft’s demands, including a $10 million upfront fee for rights, approval over the cast and director, and 60 first-class plane tickets for Microsoft representatives and their guests to the movie’s premiere.

Halo Movie Master Chief, accompanied by other Bungie and Microsoft employees, started to deliver scripts of the Halo movie to multiple studios for review. There has been an everlasting debate on if this movie will be any good and according to Bungie the script goes along with the whole Halo story. They have even created a Halo “Bible” for whatever studio picks up the film so they follow the Halo storyline. This should hopefully prevent the movie from turning into something like Super Mario Brothers or Street Fighter: The Movie.

Far Cry Instincts

Ubisoft has announced a sequel to the hit PC game Far Cry, titled Far Cry Instincts. The game story is pretty basic from what we’ve been told so far. Basically, it’s your job to survive the wilderness and take out mercenaries using every tactic and skill you know. The following bulletpoints about the game are quoted from Ubisoft’s press release:

  • It’s open season in a 100% open environment: Do whatever it takes to exterminate the mercenaries in any situation. Take cover in the undergrowth, set traps, kill by stealth, battle from extreme long range and gun-mounted vehicles and fight in close quarters or through the wilds of the island.
  • A real arsenal: Plunder an arsenal of responsive, realistic weapons and vehicles including ATVs, gunboats, hang gliders and much more. Turn the mercenaries’ stockpile into the instruments of their own destruction.
  • Unleash your predatory skills: Survive the furious and inhospitable wilderness by unveiling your true nature: develop your vision, track the enemy’s scent and become faster and stronger.
  • F.A.R. AI: Outsmart the mercenaries’ complex Full Action Response AI. Snipers, stalkers, scouts, and grenadiers react to your tactics with coordinated strikes from all angles, distances and terrains.
  • Create your own shooter’s paradise: The battle continues with deep multiplayer and level editor features. Build custom maps in real time, upload them via Live Console Systems and stage ultimate deathmatches against your friends.

The game is scheduled to be released Fall 2005.

Gears of War

While Andru and I were at E3 we saw a trailer for an awesome game called Gears of War for Xbox 360. Unfortunately, out of all the press kits and access that we had there were no trailers for us to give you all. We were able to score some screenshots for you though. I personally think that this game will be the “Halo” of Xbox 360.  The gameplay looks excellent and the graphics are amazing. We don’t have any storyline details yet, but we’ll pass them along when we get them.

Editor’s Note: I actually did get a bit of the background on the game during the Microsoft press briefing. Gears of War can best be described as a hybrid third-person shooter and survival horror game. There are locusts which do not like to be in the light. If you can stay near light, you have a better chance of surviving. The trailer shown at Microsoft’s conference was truly amazing. These screenshots are in game.

Killer 7 E3

Killer7 from Capcom has been announced and is one of the highly anticipated titles of E3 this year mainly due to that fact that this is the second cell shaded first person shooter game to be released.  XIII was the first FPS that was cell shaded, but Killer 7 has a unique twist to it.  In the game you are Harman Smith, an assassin who is the dominate consciousness over 7 different personalities. Switching between his seven different personalities, Harman employs each personality’s unique abilities to complete their mission. Using each personalities unique abilities, you must destroy creatures released by a kingpin crime boss and make your way to him to end the criminal madness.  You can switch through any of the 7 personalities during gameplay to reach your goal.  Killer 7 will be released in June 2005 for the PS2 and Gamecube.

Description With the countdown to E3 at 2 weeks, more and more news will continue to come out regarding the event.  The most recent news is Eidos has announced their slim 4 game main event line-up.  The games being displayed will be Lara Croft Tomb Raider: Legend, Hitman: Blood Money, 25 to Life and Commandos Strike Force.  Personally, I’m mainly looking forward to Hitman, with the others being secondary.  The Hitman series has always been an entertaining one, with just the right amount of difficulty.  The most recent Tomb Raider game was a disappointment, and the series can only go so far based off of Lara Croft’s figure.  The game that will be interesting to see is 25 to Life. This was on display at E3 last year and it attracted a lot of attention.  The game is mainly for online play for up to 16 players to attack and defend.  The basic premise is you can either be a thug/gangsta/bad ass, or you could be every bad guys nightmare, a cop.  It’s a modern day cops and robbers game which seems pretty interesting.

“E3 2005 marks the unveiling of the latest installments of three of the industry’s most successful franchises in addition to a first glimpse of two of the most iconic characters, Lara Croft and Agent 47,” said Paul Baldwin, Vice President of Marketing, Eidos. “The Tomb Raider, Hitman and Commandos franchises make highly anticipated returns featuring new engines and dramatically enhanced gameplay features. Additionally, Eidos will be presenting 25 To Life the first to market urban shooter featuring timeless Cops and Robbers gameplay.”

Unreal Tournament 2004 Halo Mod

You gotta love it when someone is creative and dedicated enough to bring together two things which they love. The team over at Project Torlan have been hard at work bringing the worlds of Halo and Unreal Tournament 2004 together through the development of a Halo mod for UT. Simply put, “Project Torlan is a full-scale Total Conversion mod aimed at porting HaloPC into the Unreal Tournament 2004 engine. This port will be known as HaloUT”.

Doom 3 Xbox

Doom 3 has recently come out on Xbox after being on the PC for quite some time, and you might have thought that ID Software would show the same trailers to promote the Xbox version that they used for the PC edition. Not so. Instead, ID Software took a unique approach to their advertising of Doom 3 for the Xbox. ID combined a real life scene leading in to game footage.  Some of the first words you hear in this 30 second TV Spot are, “You’re going to die.”  This is a very interesting approach to attract customers, but it’s working. ID teamed up with a company called Anonymous Content to help them put this creative ad together. You can check it out here.
