Is it a stretch that Tim Duncan will top 20 ppg again? No. What about 70% from the line? Well that is another story, is it not? It is important to slowly creep that FT% for this team up to a competitive standard. I also want to address having Arenas as my lead guard, because as hype as he is, he is not a 8-10 per game dime dropper. Plus I want to take advantage of Gilbert’s strength in treys and TD’s dominating boards. Looks like it is time for a player with a mean game but ordinary name.

Round 3, Pick 6: Jason Richardson, SG, Golden State Warriors
Don Nelson is back as the head coach of the Golden State Warriors and he’ll bring the Run & Gun style that he established with the Dallas Mavericks. There are thoughts (and hopes) that Baron Davis will thrive under Coach Nelson since Davis excels at the transition game, but the big winner will be Jason Richardson. The former back to back (’02-’03) slam dunk champion will thrive in the open court offense and will surely add a few more highlight reel dunks this season.
I’m telling you, J-Rich will set career highs in points this season under Coach Nelson.

Round 3, Pick 5: Dwight Howard, PF/C, Orlando Magic
By the time the season starts, all you have to know is this - Dwight David Howard will not legally be able to drink alcohol. Why is this important? Well it’s important not so much for fantasy basketball owners, but all of those that try to guard or box out Howard. “Big men of the NBA, after a game of banging and bruising with Dwight Howard, you deserve a drink.” And since Howard can’t imbibe alcohol, his defenders can have his because they’ll need it to numb the pain!
Entering the league at only 18 years of age had to be a tough challenge, in so many ways for Howard. However, you can count on one hand the number of “straight from high school” players that have become stars or stars-on-the-cusp after only two seasons and Howard is a finger on that hand. In fact, make Howard the middle finger because of his length (he’s got wingspan for days), height (6’11”), and the fact that he may just be the next great big man in the middle.

With two picks in the bag, I felt that this selection either needed to address notable weaknesses or simply pick the best player available, and hope for the best on the way back. Though Kevin Garnett is one of the better passing big-men in the league, the assist category is obviously my weakness at this point. However, with a couple point guards going off of the board with the most recent picks, I decided to steer away from the run, and go with whom I felt was the best guy out there:

Round 3, Pick 3: Mike Bibby, PG, Sacramento Kings
Many of you were wondering who I’d team up with Shawn Marion and Ben Wallace, well, wait no more. I’m going with the second overall pick of the 1998 NBA Draft out of the University of Arizona, PG Mike Bibby. No wonder Bibby looks so happy in the pic to the right. He’s joining my team!
In any case, despite getting drafted in a such a high spot, Bibby is basically unknown to the general NBA fan outside of the West (yes, I believe in the East Coast bias), thanks to playing with the Vancouver Grizzlies who at one time thought C Bryant Reeves was a key to their growth as a new franchise, and now with the Kings where he basically took a backseat to players such as PF Chris Webber and SF Peja Stojakovic. Well, he takes a backseat to no one now, even the super-talented and super-volatile SF Ron Artest. As much as Artest can make or break the Kings’ success, this is Bibby’s team and you’ll definitely want him on yours.

The Psuedo Studs of Fantasy Basketball

Okay, so we all pretty much know which NBA ballers will be going in the first two rounds of our fantasy basketball drafts – the Marions, the Jameses, the Garnetts, and Nashes. The first two rounds should pretty much be a walk in the park, other than wondering about a few players coming off of injuries – Tracy McGrady, Andrei Kirilenko, and Yao Ming. But, these players have so much upside and are so established as difference makers, there’s no question they’ll go in the first two rounds in most leagues, except in our DD Draft Blog: Round One – Round Two. Sorry, Tracy. But, you know what? We were probably thinking too much.
In any case, what about those unheralded players that are on the cusp of studhood? Players that will come off the draft board starting in the third round and probably no later than the fourth and maybe fifth round? Who are those players going to be?
Don’t worry, I got you with this. I can’t give away all of my secrets, but check out the following seven players. All things considered, such as position eligibility and upside I think these players could potentially put up first and second round value, or at the very least a round ahead of where they’d probably be drafted.
NOTE: Since we’re still in the middle of our DD draft, I won’t be going into great detail here since I don’t know how the draft will unfold and I may end up getting one of these guys, in which case I’d just copy and paste what I wrote and that would be just plain lazy on my part. Worse yet, I may plant a seed in my DD brothers-in-blogging to draft one of the following players because I made a compelling argument.

Round 3, Pick 2: Tracy McGrady, SG/SF, Houston Rockets
What image do you remember the most of Tracy McGrady? Do you have the image of T-Mac as the slasher and ferocious dunker like the picture of him dunking on Shawn Bradley or do you remember the image of him being wheeled out on a stretcher? Fantasy owners of T-Mac last year were crippled by the 35 games missed due to back spasms.
How can you replace 24.4 points, 6.5 boards and 4.8 assists per game?
It should not be a surprise this year to see T-Mac drop into the 2nd round or, in the Dropping Dimes Draft Blog, the 3rd round because of the injury risk factor. Is drafting T-Mac a smart gamble or is it going to hurt like a Jackass prank? Should you take a safer player available like Mike Bibby? Let’s take out the calculators and do some risk analysis!

Dropping Dimes Draft Blog: Round 3, Pick 1

While some of the first 24 picks have focused on some players that can be considered statistical specialists (Andrei Kirilenko or Ben Wallace with blocks and steals, Steve Nash with assists and free throw percentage), this team that is already comprised of LeBron James and Amare Stoudemire appears to have a firm foundation of well-rounded contributions. James is a triple-double threat every night, while Stoudemire can put up 20 and 10 with a couple blocks thrown in for good measure at the drop of a…dime. Thus, drafting for value, and attempting to not group this tandem with any one that could kill any certain category, I see no better option at this stage than to go with the off-guard from the New Jersey Nets.

Teaming Jason Kidd up with Kobe Bryant makes this, arguably (and I appreciate all comments), the best 1-2 guard combo thus far. - Dennis Velasco (see Jason Kidd post)
Kobe and Jason Kidd make a sweet guard combo for one of Dennis’ teams, provided Kobe recovers from knee surgery (and he will) and Kidd continues to produce during the downslope of his career (more iffy, but should be good for this year). Is Kobe/Kidd the best guard combo thus far? Is Kobe/Kidd the best combo
periodthus far? Here on Dropping Dimes, we aim to spit it only when we hit it. So let us take a look at whether Dennis walks the walk.
