POINTSBULLISH
Yao Ming, C, Houston Rockets
Last Week’s Numbers of Note: 4 G; 34.8 PPG; 50.9 FG%; 91.2 FT%
Usually, the top scorers are coming from everywhere BUT the center position. Indeed, the dominating scoring big man in the middle is a dying breed, but Yao Ming refuses to lay down softly and go the way of the Thighmaster. Face it people, Yao is here to stay unlike the Suzanne Somers product and he is undeniably the best center in the NBA. In his four games last week, Yao scored no less than 32 points in each contest and was feeling it so much he even attempted a trey from downtown! He miseed, but that’s about the only shot he’ll ever clang off the rim. And unlike other players that make a living down in the post, Yao hits his free throws allowing him to accumulate points from the charity stripe. Obviously, hold on to Yao like your league championship depended on it because it just might.

What does Benihana and Arenas have in common? HIBACHI!!! Apparently, whenever Agent Zero takes a shot, he’s saying the word “hibachi” with each stroke. This is just another example of Arenas’ quirky ways, but there’s no questioning it’s working, is there? Arenas is scoring a little more than six points more in the month of December than he did in November, thanks to slicing to the basket and getting to the charity stripe almost ten times a game. There hasn’t been this much success being off-kilter since Pee Wee Herman. Arenas’ stock is high, so keep your hands on him.

Well, there’s a lot going on with the Dropping Dimes team, so it looks like there won’t be enough diversity in the rankings with myself and Sarge being the only ones able to drop rankings. But, have no fear, we’re still the best fantasy basketball team out there (along with the fine folks at Give Me The Rock), so peep the rankings for Week Seven, but first check the number of games for each team. I’ll admit and say that I was a non-believer. And to some degree I still am – I’ll chalk that up to me being a disgruntled Knicks fan. But, I simply could not believe that Eddy Curry scoring as much as he was the week before was the real deal. If Howie Mandel was in front of me, I would have emphatically said, “NO DEAL!” But, you can’t argue with seven games in a row of 20+ points because instead of Curry’s physique blowing up, his post game is. Buy into it because head coach Isiah Thomas has, recently saying that Curry was the key to the team and that’s music to every Curry owner’s ears. Hopefully it doesn’t turn out to sound like an American Idol tryout.

Injury Lowdown: Surprise, Surprise Shaq Is Out!

It was reported on Friday November 17, Miami Heat Center Shaquille O’Neal will need surgery to repair torn cartilage in his left knee and will be out four to six weeks. It was originally diagnosed that Shaq was out due to a hyperextended left knee. Shaq has already missed five of the Heat’s nine game played so far.
Reported earlier this week on November 16, Milwaukee Bucks Forward Charlie Villanueva will miss at least four weeks due to a torn ligament in his left elbow. He suffered the injury on Tuesday’s game against Atlanta when he took a hard fall on his elbow.
The Denver Nuggets’ Kenyon Martin is done like a Thanksgiving turkey after the leftovers are taken to lunch the week after Thanksgiving. K-Mart had microfracture surgery on his right knee and will be out for the rest of the season. Kenyon had microfracture surgery on his left knee 18 months ago. It is hard enough to recover from microfracture surgery on one knee but for both knees?! I hope this is not the end of Kenyon Martin’s career.

Injury Lowdown: Centers of Attention

Brad Miller is out four weeks with an injured left foot. He was diagnosed with a torn plantar fascia.
Joel Przybilla missed the game against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Saturday due to a lower abdominal injury. He is expected to be out for a week.
Shaquille O’Neal missed Sunday’s game with a bruised left knee and was scheduled to have an MRI for precautionary reasons on Monday, November 6.

Stat’s All Folks: Doing It Preseason Style!

I have to admit, I was brainstorming and thinking of different ways to write an introductory paragraph about how the NBA was back, but for some reason I just couldn’t come up with anything. I wrote out the ubiquitous Star Wars reference about Episode V, but didn’t want to appear too fanboyish the first time out. Then Apocalypse Now hit my head with that whole “I love the smell of…,” but thought of the connotations and chucked that idea. Then the Rodney Dangerfield classic, Back to School came to mind and how the NBA doesn’t get any respect, but didn’t want to go on a diatribe validating the League.
So, what am I saying?
I watch entirely too many movies, but I’m also way too excited about the NBA being back to think straight. However, I’ll pop in Brad Pitt’s Meet Joe Black into the DVD player to bore me and calm my nerves enough to write this article.

Dropping Dimes Draft Blog: Round 5, Pick 2

There are a lot of fantasy owners who hate Shaquille O’Neal. Shaq aka “The Big Aristotle”, “The Diesel”, “Superman” amongst other names was the 50th player chosen in this draft?!?! Shaq is the most dominant center in this era and a future Hall of Famer, as well as being named one of the Top 50 players ever while he was still in the middle of his career. For Pete’s sake, Chris Kaman was chosen before Shaq?! Sure Shaq’s free throw percentage is crap (career 52.8 FT%) and he misses a few games (he has missed an average of 15 games in the last 5 years), but does he truly deserve all this hate to be chosen behind Chris Kaman?
Chris Kaman?!?!

The Business of Turnovers

So, a friend of mine always seems to bring up turnovers when considering drafting a player and while I can understand why (as it is one of the nine basic categories in fantasy basketball) I can’t help but to say the following:
Who cares.
No disrespect to my friend, as he does know his fantasy hoops, but I just don’t care so much about this business of turnovers. I’m not saying to knowingly punt the category, but I am saying don’t care about it as much as you do points, rebounds, assists, steals, blocks, 3-pointers made, and the percentages when you draft. Why you ask?
Let me give you my $0.10.

Dropping Dimes Draft Blog: Round 1, Pick 6

Dwyane Wade coming out party was on center stage during the NBA Finals, where he averaged 34.7 points, 7.8 rebounds, 3.8 assists, 2.67 steals and 1.0 blocks per game for the championship series! Wade was named the MVP for the NBA Finals and showed a glimpse of what he can do for fantasy teams in the future.
There are whispers that Wade was working on adding the 3-ball to his portfolio. If the NBA Playoffs were an indicator of his newfound range, then he would be making only 50 3-balls made over an 82 game schedule. He would have to at least double the 3 pointers made to have 2nd overall considerations behind Lebron James. Still Wade is a welcome employee to any fantasy team.
