Weekend Reading: Mo Willems, Bruce Timm, TMNT and Wally Wood

batgirlAnother big week for people with money to throw around as Nickelodeon just bought the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for $60 million. This is yet another reason why it’s great to hold onto your copyrights. If you’re just working on Batman And The Outsiders #128, you already know it’s a basically a boilerplate work-for-hire contract, but if you’ve created Dingo, Rescue Dog Of The Outback get that thing copyrighted in your name and hold onto it. Because it’s always better for you to have the control - and any related money - than it is to just give it away to a corporation. In the meantime, if you’re tired of reading about contract negotiations, take a look around the internet and discover what folks like Mo Willems, Alan Kupperburg, Bill Crider and Bruce Timm are up to. Here’s how you can fill up your weekend:

Alan Kupperburg: Steven Thompson over at Hooray for Wally Wood, has a nice interview with Alan talking about his days working for Wood. Great stuff. Here’s a taste: “So then he (Wood) asked me if I could pencil Cannon for him. I took the pages home and opened up my T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents and copied out the appropriate panels and adapted them to the situation. And Woody flipped out. He said, ‘You’re hired.’ Within three weeks I was also writing Sally and Cannon.”

Back To The Future: I always thought that Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale got it wrong - just a little bit - in Back to the Future II. Instead of the sports almanac, I’d have Biff Tannen take a copy of the Overstreet Price Guide and go back to 1970. After looking at the back issue prices from 39 years ago, I believe I’m right. Meet me at the DeLorean!

Captain America: Over at Johnny LaRue’s Crane Shot, Marty McKee has a nice review of Holocaust For Hire, a 1979 Captain America novel (a book without pictures) that was written by Ron Goulart under one of his many pen-names, Joseph Silva. The verdict? “One of the series highlights,” plus there’s a great Dave Cockrum cover to go with it. Much more at the link.

Kevin Eastman: As 1/2 of the team that created the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (the other half is Peter Laird who just sold the green-shelled heroes to Nickelodeon), Kevin’s got something new for 2010. He’s executive producer on War Of The Worlds: Goliath. The trailer is here. I try to see all tripod-based movies and I think I’m going to like seeing them fight bi-planes in this one. Seriously, tripods vs. bi-planes, who’s not interested now?

Quebecor: It might have been a while since you thought about how to print a comic book, or read about problems at Canada’s major comic book printer, but if it’s crossed your mind, the Canadian comics blog, Sequential, has a Quebecor update for you.

Mystery novelist Bill Crider likes The Toon Treasury of Classic Children’s Comics that was edited by Art Spiegleman & Françoise Mouly. He writes of his love of comics: “I was such an addict that my aunt once gave me a small can of dimes for my birthday. She taped a little note to the can that said, ‘Strictly for funny books.’” He finds the book stirs up those kinds of memories.

Mo Willems: Animator, cartoonist, blogger and award-winning children’s book author blogs about a very worthwhile cause coming up November 5: Doodle For Hunger

Bruce Timm: Is there anything better than finding a great gallery of wonderful Bruce Timm artwork in black and white and color? I think not. This is one of my favorite pieces, but feel free to search for your own.

Star Trek: Next Generation: Captain Picard finally proposes.

Frankenstein Meets The Robots: This is a movie I desperately want to see. Please, someone, make it for me!

That’s it for now. Have a great weekend on the internet!
