Debra Messing has filed for divorce from her husband of 11 years.
The Smash actress and Daniel Zelman announced their separation last year, but continued to live together for the sake of their eight-year-old son, Roman. However, Debra, 43, has now decided to officially end their union and is citing "irreconcilable differences" as the reason behind the split.
According to gossip website TMZ.com, Debra is requesting joint custody of their son and is also seeking spousal and child support.
Debra - who has been linked to her Smash co-star Will Chase since the split - recently spoke about the breakdown of her marriage and insisted she had no regrets: "Twenty years. It's a very long time. I think the institute of marriage is a noble thing. The idea of a partner for life is incredibly romantic. But now we're living to 100. A hundred years ago people were dying at age 37. Til death do us part was a much different deal."

Debra Messing Opens up About Marriage Split

Debra Messing has spoken for the first time about her marriage breakdown. The former Will and Grace star and her producer husband Daniel Zelman announced their 11-year marriage was over last December, bringing an end to a relationship that began in 1990 when they met at college.
The split coincided with Debra - who has a seven-year-old son Roman with Daniel - relocating from Los Angeles to New York to shoot new TV show Smash, and she admits the amount of changes in her life were tough for her to deal with.
"It's like 20 years. It's a very long time. When I say the move to New York was traumatic, it was traumatic because every aspect of my life was going through a huge change," she said in an interview in the June issue Ladies' Home Journal magazine.
Although when Debra said her vows she thought she was marrying for life, she thinks the concept of marriage is becoming outdated because of changes in modern society: "I think the idea of a partner for life is incredibly romantic. But now we're living to 100. A hundred years ago people were dying at age 37. Till death do us part was a much different deal."

Debra Messing has split with her husband.
The Will and Grace star ended her 11 year marriage to producer Daniel Zelman earlier this year, but the pair remain close and committed to their seven-year-old son Roman. "They privately separated earlier this year. The decision was mutual and they remain supportive of one another and committed to raising their son as a family," her representative said.
Despite their break-up, Debra and Daniel - who met on their first day at New York University in 1990 - still live together. "They have been separated the better part of the year but continue to live together in New York for Roman. It's very amicable," a source said.
Debra has previously claimed the reason they stayed together was because they met when they were young and grew as a couple. "I think we're lucky we met really young when we were both students and hopeful about the future and excited by the romance of the struggle then. I think we just have a real respect for each other as individuals, and I think we're lucky as we grew up together we grew closer instead of further away. Our goals and priorities and perspectives became more in line with each other than when we first met," she said.
